Madlib has a lot of meh projects and I think Al is consistently better. It’s just Madlibs highs (Madvilliany and Piñata) are higher than anything Al has done imo

And yeah it’s because he started doing digital beat making for bandana instead of sitting at physical boards so his beats became less complex. Idk if he’s still doing that, it’s really hard to say if and when each beat pack is from and what he’s doing anymore

Nah there’s so many great rappers, the top 40 or so is stacked. On my last attempt at a list Gibbs was closer to 45-50 spot consideration

i always thought bandana's production felt very sterile by comparison. i read after that madlib did it all on his ipad which felt like it may be contributory but might just be my own bias

still a good album but yeah

Some fire beats got cut cause of sample clearance. I don't think pinata cleared anything. Also the directors cut version by madlib is a lot more raw sounding
