I agree that they were probably made during the same recording sessions, but I think he always knew for the most part which songs would be on Endless and which songs would be on Blonde.

Endless is a lot more formless & experimental whereas Blonde is more structured & airy.

Endless feels like one long stream of consciousness and Blonde is a lot more of a statement piece.

Endless is like a collection of scatterbrained ideas while each song on Blonde feels like a very significant and purposeful vignette of Frank’s past.

I think that was very intentional and that Frank had a distinct idea from the get-go of what he wanted each project to be

I thought Blonde was all done in LA/Malibu and London studios, and Endless was hotel rooms in Japan/Paris etc.

Could be 100% wrong tho

Both are airy lol

The projects are curated and executed in a very different way. That is what’s making you feel that way. The songs themselves, there is a lot of overlap in topics and even instrumentation: both aren’t really drum heavy and mostly organic instrumentation (many tracks and moments are just a keyboard or a guitar and Frank). There is more electronic elements kept on Endless. Blonde obviously was cleaned up and finished more, fleshed out into full songs where as Endless tracks, essentially the B sides, were kind of kept in demo form and stitched together in an extremely thrilling way that made them transcend a b sides collection

The lyrical themes I already mentioned, Endless has a lot of the same nostalgic narrative feeling that blond carries. I really just think you’re projecting your feelings about the art onto the creative process.. Wither, Alabama, and Higgs, would not be out of place on Blond by any means, even At Your Best fits the sonic palette pretty well

Then there’s Close To You, Pretty Sweet, Good Guy, the Blond interludes which feel very Endless in some ways. Nikes and Futura Free are not far off from Mitsubishi Sony, UNITY, and Sideways. There’s so much overlap as neither project is just one thing

Last thing I’ll touch on is how there was different versions of each track, Frank would write a song like White Ferrari or Ivy and experiment with completely different production styles for them. Now we know there’s an electronic version of White Ferrari in addition to the rock version: some elements of both survived on the official version, but we never really know what any of the Blond songs originally sounded like. My conclusion from that is, most of what separates Blond and Endless isn’t fundamental to the songs themselves, but rather the final production and execution of ideas.

The conclusion you came to is why I think Frank had two distinct projects in mind from the get-go. Yes they do share similarities but the projects are very unique from one another though even though they may be alike in some ways. That doesn’t feel like a coincidence to me.

All those shorter songs/interludes you name feel very representative of the projects they landed on.

Mitsubishi Sony, Unity, Sideways are all feel like streams of consciousness, whereas Close to You, Good Guy, and the Blonde interludes feel like retellings of very specific and significant moments in Frank’s adolescence

It’s not a coincidence, it’s because they were finished very differently. I believe the main differences you’re hearing are in the final execution of sequencing the material, it’s not inherent in the material itself.
