What do you guys like most about Frank's music? Like what does he do differently than other artists?
idk if he does anything differently i mean blonde isn’t exactly something that hasn’t been done but the execution of his vision is so immaculate it’s spooky

where has something like blonde been done before

the carpenters, elliott smith, nikes beat doesn’t sound too out of place if it came from 40 or even jamie xx. dean blunt - black metal i hear all over the record too. def hear bon iver too. i hear a lot of s*** artists have already done on this record but like i said the execution is so good and he does add his own twist.

i'm gonna explore those artists you listed more deeply and see
def hear some bon iver in the production

elliott smith was interpolated on seigfried , close to you is a carpenters cover, beatles were interpolated on white ferrari and helped him out of a year long writers block with beach boys.

you lowkey wrapped it like frank ocean a cover artist or something. sure it was a thing during mixtape era, but now he's not just elliott smith or nick drake with his own twist
it's easy to fingerpoint on things he officially interpolated and say it's the same and done before (ignoring the fact that his sampling most of the time is just one line), but frank is not a parody artist, like most of the artists when they're inspired by something. frank is one of the most (if not the most) idiosyncratic modern pop artists, even james blake can't get his approach. and that's his main power
with all being said some beatles/beach boys techniques are all over that blonde album. but you still can't say "oh you like brian eno, todd rundgren and anthrax and want something modern? listen to frank ocean". even modern minimalists like nicolas jaar are a completely different music. and that dean blunt connection is made-up and just wrong. it's actually very hard to make parallels with frank ocean and that's for a reason

tbh id say that post rock usually has the closest feeling to blonde, especially compared to elliott smith and dean blunt

never said he was a parody artist you’re looking for an argument which isn’t there. all i said is that for me is him being able to bring really personal songs and universal themes together in a super crazy way is what’s his appeal and he isn’t reinventing the wheel to me. also i’m not really wrong about any of the artists i mentioned. half the blonde songs don’t sound too out of place compared to molly & aquafina for instance
To compare Blonde to Elliott Smith or the Beatles and whatever feels reductive. Frank says himself that there’s also the hip-hop songwriting approach to his music that creates its own voice. Sure there are similar sounds and themes found among those artists, but no way would any of those artists structure or vocally deliver a song like he does Nikes or Nights or White Ferrari. I don’t think Blonde is completely uncharted territory, but I also don’t think you can just cite his influences and say that someone who likes those artists would necessarily like Blonde or any of his other work.

i was gonna say something like this

what music has "reinvented the wheel" to you?
what music has "reinvented the wheel" to you?
idk reinventing the wheel albums are very rare so i guess s*** like the chronic or what have you but even then i didn’t say there’s anything wrong with frank not doing that. his music still nice
I hate how nobody ever cites Channel Orange after Blonde and Endless came out. RIP
why the title says philly
Rumored to be the title for the movie he is making with A24
His music is very unique it’s basically like rnb hip hop beach boys
There's nothing beach boys about this stop

Florida easily sounds like a song that could’ve fit on their Smile album

In terms of structuring a song, the Beatles put out day in the life and revolution 1/9
Page is embarrassing

I knew that this one would get brought up. It's the only one and the harmony is not particularly beach boys tbh just the arrangement. I'm a frank fan btw it's just different music
