I think this way the fragrance doesn't mix with your skin and I prefer that it does but I'm not 100%

I do this. Rub Vaseline on my neck, behind my ears and on my inner elbows then apply fragrance. But I'm mostly using dupes, so their longevity is poor

these are all easy to find and lesser priced and have mass appeal and good wearability without dipping into more niche scents or price points. imo i would start with these mass appeal ones and see how much you like perfume/fragrane in general and maybe what notes you like (if any) before moving to more artsy stuff
