How do you successfully dodge an enemy beam when it locks on to you? Even if you dodge roll your still gonna get hit

bro am I ed or is this battle in chapter 11 right before you get back to sector 7 extremely difficult. it seems like a run of the mill monster battle but I keep losing.

I mean I beat the OG FF7 and tbf I forgot most of it, so whatever their doing to the story im all for it. Still feels like a very nostalgic game with characters I loved when I was a kid. So im very excited to see what the next part has in store.
