I’ve seen a lot of skepticism from normies who aren’t really familiar with the pedigree of the development team behind XVI or who have somehow overlooked the strong vision for the game communicated through the marketing material.

Between XIV, VII Remake, and XVI, the Final Fantasy brand is in the finest form it’s been in since the PS2 era.

If you've seen a lot of skepticism from normies, isn't that a sign that it isn't having a mainstream renaissance?

nah man, it's all Nomura's fault

Seriously though, glad you pointed that out. Bit tired of seeing Nomura get s*** for something that was completely the fault of the execs at Square. XV's development was truly a mess. Really hate to see that we didn't get Nomura's original vision of Noctis. Though, guess we may be getting something close to that in the KH games.

Also, the same with what you mentioned with FF7R lol. Definitely sounds like it would've been Nomura, but I was surprised to see that wasn't the case.

Can't lie though Nomura's stroytelling has gotten beyond bad lately. Could chuck Toriyama in that as well

The messy development and launch of XV were a failure of Square's management, not Nomura or Tabata. Square didn't learn their lesson from having XIII and XIV 1.0 be developed on the undercooked Crystal Tools engine and insisted on moving Versus XIII over to the equally broken Luminous engine. The game was in development hell for so long that it was rebranded in to XV for marketing purposes and then rushed out to recoup development costs.

It honestly sucks that Square took Nomura's passion project away from him and tanked Tabata's reputation when they tasked him to pick up the pieces. Square gave both of these men a very raw deal.

This video is the most comprehensive review of XV's development that currently exists if you're interested:

Regarding VII Remake, my gut reaction was to pin the direction of its narrative on Nomura as well but it's actually being determined by Kitase and Nojima (but I don't feel like getting in to that right now).

I get that, but he did originally want 15 to be a trilogy and for it to take another 2-3 years to release (which it f***ing needed in the end ), story was changed within months of release which I guess you could blame Tabata solely.

Tabata deserved another chance, really did like him.

We'll see how much Nomura puts on Verser into the new KH game,

FF7 Kitase being the lord above of all I get that, but Nomura just loves a random. Which may be for the better for the series

i'm very in but there's something about this game that isn't gripping me how i thought it would

Might partly be the aesthetic influence? We've seen it with Witcher and a bunch of other games but also with shows like GoT over the last few years.

"To bring players a wide variety of environments, in the highest quality possible, and ultimately enhancing game experience, we selected several areas that we wanted to focus on – and created those in extreme detail."

Yoshida notes that the world is still huge – but also very detailed. In a video (and later, in our own hands-on with the game) we got to see just what this means. There is a lot of graphical fidelity – I personally think the visuals and effects on show in this game denote the proper beginning of the new generation, it's that impressive – and though we were only taken on a whistlestop tour of the game in a quick video, what I saw put me in mind of Final Fantasies of old.

There were huge, populous towns, imposing caves and dungeons, huge areas that we were promised we could explore once the game was properly in our hands. I am not expecting Elden Ring levels of freedom here, the game isn't open world after all, but the detail and fidelity in what we've seen so far matches – and possibly even exceeds – what FromSoft did in its 2022 blockbuster hit.

Let it be April already goddamn.

I joke the main final fantasy I played was tactics advanced. Then JRPG or RPG since they dont like the J in front is Ni No kuni. But I think i am in for this

If the last two JRPGs you played are Tactics Advanced and Ni No Kuni, you've done yourself a great disservice. Maybe I misunderstood though.

Most criticism of Nomura beyond his storytelling is generally unfair. I feel like his name gets thrown out whenever something goes wrong at Square like he’s the only person that works there.

I don’t expect much from Kingdom Hearts / Verum Rex beyond homages and sequel teasing. Versus XIII was a bloody Shakespearean tragedy (elements of which survived in XV) and Kingdom Hearts is a series where characters wax poetic about friendship and can’t say the word ‘kill’. Those themes don’t mesh well and writing in Kingdom Hearts just isn’t strong enough to support them.

Definitely not. That skepticism doesn’t diminish the recent glowing reception towards the brand.
