Exactly true. Side Quest, RPG elements and world aren't really why I am here. I respect if anyone feels they are extremely lacking. I have been doing most side quest and know they improve late game especially like hunts but RPG wise 100% minigames and different simple task to do would all help flesh everything out character and world wise. I just personally don't look at it for that sense . About to listen to his review
yeah i agree, i’m not playing it for that either but they are honestly very bad (so far)
The Witcher 3 did this extremely well
Witcher 2 and 3 also add in choice. This is all fine that its linear but want to hit the player with more to the world by quite a bit
The funny thing is, I feel like, barring 15 in instances, FF 13 still kind of feels like the basis for modern FF games.
Both this and 7 Remake, for the most part, are incredibly linear, borderline hallway driven experiences most of the time.

Apparently you should just do side quests that feature a + mark.
Those are the substantial ones.
This completely plays like an offline FFXIV for better or worse tbh
Been enjoying parts of the game but I have been thinking this exact same thing, theres so much XIV DNA and tbh, while some of it is welcome, a lot of it doesn't translate that well into a single player game.

Yeah I agree. I’m at Martha’s Rest and let me just say the existence of a Triple Triad type minigame alone would COMPLETELY transform and elevate this game in terms of rewarding spoils/exploration, town explorstion and side quest variety.
Like, literally every vending or reward system in this game would be buffed with no drawbacks
all you find while exploring is potions or crafting materials. Imagine completing a hunt and unlocking that enemy as a triad card, or having a quest that asks you to cook for people, and being rewarded with stories of old events in that area? Idk, I was understanding of them deciding not to have mini games in this but dude
Cooking, Fishing, and Triple Triad would almost single-handedly solve the game’s mission structure, reward, exploration, side quest, and RPG mechanic issues at once. So far those are the FF staples I’m missing the most.
I’m loving the game overall though
This is some insane cope
I think the issue they’re bringing up is the fact that the game is pretty bare bones given its length.
Outside of set pieces, there’s not much in the way of surprises.

Hell, the first side quest you do where you have to bring wood to the guy made me think “Why can’t there just be a little mini game where I chop the wood?”
Like literally a QTE, time the button press type thing, just to give a little something something.
These new FFs just don’t feel very fleshed out. Kind of barebones.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth so soon
I just find it so bizarre that they literally released an interview about the game’s side quests less than a week ago where they specifically said they wanted to get away from MMO style side quests.
Like, what the f*** was up with that?

It seems like every modern FF game has ONE important piece of the series identity missing that holds it back from being a GOAT RPG
XV didn’t have a good story, FF7R didn’t cover the full scope of an FF adventure, and XVI is missing hard with the mission structure and side content. I think they complement each other well though and playing one of them makes me appreciate what the others did right
XV blows XVI out of the water in terms of engaging, meaningful exploration and mission design which I’m honestly really surprised with considering the XV team had the burden of making a massive open world and populating it with content. XVI’s story and set pieces are a complete win for me so far but man... Whenever the main story is taking a backseat, the game’s quality does not hold up to the same degree.

Whats funny is that FFXIV has all those mini-games you just mentioned + more
Right now, there are a lot of things that I'm giving this game a pass for that I actually wouldn't do for other games.
What happened between now and a few hours ago
The difference in highs and lows in this game should be studied

Nah, I'm just joking. I do agree with pretty much everything you said. For the side content and stuff like that, I'm looking at this game as more of an action game rather than a typical JRPG, so it bothers me much less.
Kinda the same with exploration, but I can't really put into words why I have more of a problem with that. I actually even prefer something like the old Trails games with the isometric view and really simple "hallway" maps to something like this. I guess this definitely has more exploration, but there's just something missing for me.

While I do like it, I really wish I hadn’t been obsessively following every sliver of marketing and hype for this game for so long. I thought this’d be my dream game but every piece of info about it brought me back down to reality to the point where I’m only just now accepting that it’ll just be “good.”
From the first trailer and info dump in Oct 2020, I had envisioned a diverse, fantastical world with different skin tones and hair types allowing for more interesting town and character design. I got humbled when that second trailer hit and we saw 0 black faces
I had envisioned solo Clive gameplay from the jump, but figured you’d be able to issue commands to party members like a neutered version 7R. I got brought back to reality when we found out party members would be totally AI controlled
I had envisioned fun, PS1 style or at the very least 7R styled mini games to break up the monotony of watching cutscenes then running around and fighting stuff. Got brought back to reality when they announced no mini games
I had envisioned XV style side dungeons, that got struck down via interview as well
I had envisioned zone based exploration and was HYPED for the possibilities. I saw that instead of XII/XIV style transitions, you just choose from a world map and was slightly deflated but still hyped. Now that I’m playing it, it isn’t reaching the heights I imagined it would outside of the story dungeons and set pieces.
I went into this expecting a modern FF game that would be more than just a modern FF. But I’m now coming to terms with the fact that this is just a modern FF and won’t be reversing the trend of modern entries being good at some things and ass at others.
