You literally the only person saying this.

Not at all. Many people have expressed that they wish we had actual difficulty modes and that we shouldn’t have to play a 60+ hour game once and then play it again to get the most out of it. I been saying it since they announced FF mode without even showing it off. Showing it off made me like it even less.

There’s a bit of a psyop brewing around this positive pre-release reception but criticism is out there and justified

I’m assuming you haven’t played many JRPGs, or classic FFs (4 through 9).

Also, there’s nothing explicitly GoT about this game outside of leaning more into darker territory.

Political intrigue, imperialist acts, even the setting is treaded territory for the series.

I think them mentioning GoT was a bit of a mistake because to a lot of people, for some reason, GoT is seen as the originator of dark fantasy, so anytime anything violent or sexual occurs they’re going to immediately attribute it to being a GoT moment, even if it’s completely appropriate for the narrative, tone or setting.

Ive played every final fantasy game, every tales game including the snes ones, every persona game besided 1 and 2. I know all about jrpgs. But you got a king saying “that will make a good hound someday!” And two ppl basically having full on s***on screen in the first 5 mins. S*** is game of thrones season 1 ep 1 remake so far with a bit of house of the dragons mixed in.

They don’t have sex, they make out, and it’s made clear by her look at the end of the cutscene that she’s manipulating him.

It’s not done sleazily, it’s a little titillating, sure, but then again you can do f***ing air combos in the game, so a little over the topness is consistent.

I still think Nier Automata had the best demo tho tbh

There’s plenty of games that have locked difficulty modes though.

They also showed in the demos that you can fight enemies that are higher level than you, and if you’re good enough you can take them on.

For most of those games tho it is what it is. You aren’t going to unlock all the difficulty modes after you beat the game once

16 has fixed difficulty for new game (I don’t buy that BS about the timely accessories being the difficulty mods. S*** is nonsense) but then you get hard mode and very hard after beating the game.

If I finish this game I’m not gonna replay it for months or years, if ever. Idk who replays 60 hour games right after beating them.

What the f*** is this tutorial ass s***. This is worse than ratchet and clank. And why is this all feel like they watched game of thrones and told chat gpt to write a similar story in the world of final fantasy?

And now we also learned that NG+ is the only place where you can get score ratings on your combat performance because they want you to focus on story in new game

I figured that. It’s apparent that they really want you to focus on experiencing the story on your first run. Sucks for me cus I never give af about a games story. I just want to actually play.

Dog there is quite a lot of Jon snow, Ned stark, catelyn stark, firewood and a lil bran corollary in that opening denying that seems intentionally obtuse. Clive gives a bit of a Basch / what-if vibe for ff-12 too. It’s not a problem ff devs are open about influences e.g. how much Star Wars is in the games.

Completely disagree with you. I'm really not sure of what you mean by saying FF7R rewards you with being creative. I definitely never felt like I really had to change my strategy too far outside the norm in that game besides having to cast Thunder because the enemy is weak to it lol (unless you're talking about hard mode, where I think you're actually forced to be less creative with your build, though its been a bit so I can't fully remember).

I also do not think we've seen nearly enough when it comes to 16's boss design to say we won't have to completely switch up our strategies. Who knows, maybe you can't just spam attack and you need to use your Eikon abilities to break the guard/parry or something to that effect? I don't think that's too far out of the question since we already see that with some enemies in the demo. I think people who do play a "simpler" way bynot utilizing all the abilities in their arsenal will end up complaining that the fights take too long.

You also have way more options in 16 compared to 7R, which I think lends to it being much more creative. Have you seen the stuff people pull off in DMC or Bayo?

More options are (usually) never a bad thing in combat-heavy games. Sure, you can always just dodge instead of using an Eikon ability to counter (and the game isn't outright stopping you from doing that or anything), but the ability to do something besides dodging is fantastic and gives you more agency to do something new and cool instead of dodging then pressing one button to attack over and over. This type of combat is the epitome of being creative and that "rewarding factor" (at least for me) is that it's more of an intrinsic thing that makes me say, "holy s***, that combo was sick".

As for the combat for this wildly different from previous entries, each tends to do something new in terms of the gameplay. There's usually some new gimmick or gameplay style, so I don't think it's very fair say this is something that's too much of a different tempo when it's in the series DNA to do something new (just look at going from the combat in 10 to 12 and then into 13).

Eh, you're right. I shouldn't judge a game by a demo. I think for now FF7R is what I prefer because I am used to that combat system, but once I am fully used to XVI who knows I might prefer that, especially if the game takes the time to introduce us to each eikonic ability and use it for its purpose.

It's really got a ton of potential. Being able to swap through all the different Eikons mid battle opens up a ton of different options and playstyles. Despite all of that I wouldn't even say this sort of action combat is my favorite, since that'd definitely go to either KH2 or KH3 ReMind (helps that the boss designs in those two are unreal). But yeah, the combat systems all really come down to preference and I don't blame you for preferring 7R's since the team did a great job on that.

Hope you end up really enjoying it. Looking forward to Rebirth's combat since I'm sure they've improved on that even more. Even if it's just as good as Yuffie's combat in Intermission, I'll be very content

People have been blowing that one out of proportion from an article where Yoshi-P mentioned that the team had to binge watch GoT.

But, in recent interviews and at the panels the team said they took inspiration from FF I-V, GoT, Lord of the Rings, Evangelion, "other things lik Godzilla or Ultraman". So I don't think it's fair to just reduce it to that.

My impression of the demo was heavy FF references, with Godzilla type battles in the background. I think if all you know about medieval fantasy is GoT then you will think it's like GoT obviously, but to me it was giving King Arthur vibes.

There are influences, I didn’t dispute that, but a lot of those character arc types have precedence in earlier, more medieval based entries in the series (more specifically 4 and especially 5).

    I’m saying it’s not 1:1.

    Then just skip the cutscenes.

New Game Plus even gives you the option to skip the prologue entirely.

There’s also a bloody palace equivalent.

Like, no f***ing s*** in a AAA Final Fantasy game they want you to appreciate the multi-million dollar epic ass cutscenes that they made.

This is THE cutscene series. FMVs have been a selling point for these games since 7.

This lines up with what Maehiro was saying about how he poured so much of his soul into Clive and doesn't think he'll ever be able to write a better character. There's nothing more promising than the genuine confidence these developers have in their work.

You not understanding. I don’t have a problem with cutscenes, story focused games, or wanting players to experience the story

I have a problem with treating players like they’re dumb and moving all of the good gameplay to NG+ and treating NG as a story experience. Why can’t we focus on both at the same time?

I’ll be playing Trails into Reverie on day 1 this year and that game will have more dialogue and cutscenes than 90% of games but at least I’ll be able to pick nightmare difficulty on my first run
