Might be tough for some people to fathom but he was the greatest rapper alive and at the very top for a number of years, and was battle tested both coming up and at the height of his fame. Add that to the "cred" he had via his Detroit roots and he basically could do whatever he wanted and it would go by.

Gangsta/durag-era Em is crazy looking back but it absolutely made sense at the time and still goes hard today lol

Yeah Em was a goat for 4 years but The Beasties had more than 2 incredible decades (and I don't include their trash debut)
