They did, but they kind of “refined” it in a way. Japan was pulling more from the weirder side of 70’s art rock. Duran Duran took that, and leaned further into where Roxy Music and Ultravox were going. Japan is maybe the more interesting band overall, but Rio is a perfect record and probably better than any individual Japan album.
