I don't listen to halsey at all but fantano is delusional thinking he holds more weight than an actual artist of her stature in this industry

Fantano was the bridge between a truly amazing musical canon and the wider audience it deserved but was insulated from because of the niche nature of the Internet corners it originated in. If he deserves his flowers for anything, which I do think he does, it was making watchable videos for a general audience that sold them on a ton of acts they otherwise would have no idea about, and in an accessible manner.

That being said he’s not a serious “music critic” and never considered himself one until relatively recently where he’s had this weird turn where he needs to be taken much more seriously than he is and compensates by doing like activism and cultural critiques no one asked for.

The clearest evidence for this is his tagline, “the internet’s busiest music nerd”. People were never supposed to anxiously wait for Fantano’s review of some new album. That wasn’t the point. The point was that he was the guy who got people who otherwise wouldn’t go on mu or rym or even 2014 reddit into death grips and radiohead. Clearly a figure like this has outstayed its welcome which I think is why he is the way he is now. Nothing is niche anymore.

He has more viewers than ever before. I don't like him, or even watch his reviews, but he is undeniably correct about being the most relevant and impactful critic of his generation.

However I think he is wrong about most relevant and impactful EVER - monoculture era critics like Christgau and Lester Bangs had far more sway over what people listened to.
