Very BasedExactly. Lots of critics clearly get a hard-on for a pop artist making the transition into "serious" singer/songwriter. (which doesn't even make sense btw) It's the kind of thing that excites them. Same thing when a comedy actor/actress dips their toes in more serious dramatic roles.
I think critics like to think of themselves as at the forefront when it comes to seeing something really new or interesting happening in music (or any scene). After all, they're supposed to be immersed in that world.
What comes out of that, like right now, is in my opinion disingenuous criticism. Not that the album was a bad album or anything.
