i read the prologue and just treat it like chapter 1. never thought to skip it

If it's part of the story I'll definitely read it. Unless you mean like author introductions and forewords and stuff? Those I skip til later, yeah. I think a lot of people do.

I also had to skip the Fellowship of the Ring audiobook prologue after 40+ minutes of hobbit history

So yeah I can see skipping "history of the world" type s*** as it can quickly get boring as you're not even gripped by the plot yet
