Idk the isolated island setting of Portrait alongside the impending inevitability of separation really gives it a special, tense, distant and depressing feeling. We know hardly anything about the characters and I think that's done on purpose, beautifully. It's like we're invading on the most private of private moments. A taboo relationship on an island in a far distant time period between two strangers that will never meet face to face again, and we know that. Yet here we are, watching the only 2 weeks of their lives together, just as important to their lives as it is meaningless.

most obvious Prince influence (+ Kinks obviously).

I love these guys. I ate up their 3 albums when you put me onto them. This one is really beautiful.

Me neither. I hadn't seen it but was b****ing about the extreme feminist over correction where it was ranked 30th greatest film of all time (and Jeanne Dielman suddenly shot up to #1) on Sight & Sound and my gf was calling me a misogynist lol. then we watched and even she couldn't pretend she wasn't bored as f***

Jeanne Dielman is good at least but when I told her the length and general plot she was out.

Been out the KTT2 game for a bit but figured I'd come back for a little bit

Locked in the studio really good & overcame a minor health issue too

One of the most intriguing parts of this studio run was the act of replaying old instrumentals that I had been sitting on but hadn't written full lyrics to or recorded more than freestyled verses/hooks over.
There's tracks I was sitting on for 2-4 years that I finally got the vocal ideas down for, felt good
I didn't have writer's block but usually for most of my finished and released tracks I lead with the vocal ideas as opposed to making the instrumental first. Or I at least have them vocal ideas and instrumental ideas at the same time.

Been tryna push myself to write on command better so I can collaborate better, I get ideas for writing all the ideas, but the act of sitting down to write like a scheduled task is usually harder for me. I think Frank said something similar a decade ago.

It's sort of like how I usually start any ableton session for a new idea tbf, I will easily get an idea and run the studio setup, rather than already being there.
Although s/o to the super good days where flow state happens.

Good tip to try also, I'm sure it's obvious though
When you ain't got any ideas, copy/play a basic chord progression and loop it up with some basic accompaniment and let it spark an idea, one of my favourite tracks that I'm gonna rework started off from me hearing a Steve Lacy chord progression and flipping it on its head.
(S/O to Mac Miller, I remember when he said 'them Steve Lacy chords' on the Internet's Apple Music show the week before he passed away)

Might put up a new avi
This one served its time but it's kinda plain, maybe the plain avi is why I got no rep on KTT2 although when I just had the solid colour red avi it was actually way more recognisable (until someone else had one too )
Edit: i did it, the true BRL
Also S/O to the Scammys for giving D'Angelo a dedicated tribute slot, Lucky Daye's performance could've been someone else tho
& props to Lauryn even though I don't mess with her (Miseducation is superb but folks still pedestal her more than she deserves, Erykah will always be the one, hell MeShell deserves them props too)

Also, S/O to y'all for keeping me hot, it feels good to see the meme is eternal & whenever y'all bump that thread

Makes me feel like I actually had some impact during my 13+ years of KTT, even if it feels like I never moved the needle/got any rep on here

  • This is really good
