If Cameron went with some more ballsy/creative writing and just made it an alien focused story it could be cool. The whole humans VRing as Smurfs so the dumbass casual audience can relate s*** is what kills a lot of my interest it. It's easier to sell this way, I guess. It's still really cool visually.

Jake Sooly and especially Quaritch as avatars are so f***ing stupid I can't take any of it seriously

Yeah SFX wise totally. The characters all suck except for Zoey who is putting in triple the effort as anyone else. Sam Worthington is cardboard and 70 year old Sigourney playing a teenager

Literally it's all carried by the crazy graphics cause everything else is just so f***ing dumb

Quaritch and Kiri are both fantastic characters and I love the sincerity of the storytelling and the world. And I love how spiritual the story is especially because I feel most movies lack that completely

but yeah theres more real charm and feeling packed into 5 minutes of any good Ghibli than all 9 hours of the Avatar franchise lol. i wonder what Miyazaki thinks of them.

Miyazaki may come off as a stubborn old c*** but he clearly has a lot of heart and is an idealist, creatively at least. Even if he was a s*** dad.

Meh wouldn’t go that far and I do think every avatar film is better than a fair amount of Hayaos work, including Spirited Away

Though for sure Wind Rises and Princess Mononoke, my favs of his, are as strong if not stronger than the best avatar films

There’s more emotion in avatar than 99.9% of s*** out there in film. Only anime can compete and tbh there’s much better anime out there than what’s coming from Ghibli

yeah Spiritied Away has never been my favourite, im a Porco Rosso guy lol also Nausicaa/Mononoke/Laputa/ Wind Rises. Boy and the Heron was amazing as well.

i havent no. the anime i have watched recently isnt very miyazaki at all lol

this one is kinda ghibli-ish i guess? it's all pretty and whimsical and then suddenly it's dealing with the tsunami of 2011 and death trauma.
