about to embark on my 14th Indian film of the past month or so

when are you gonna man up and watch Pather Panchali

its not Bollywood or anything like that but was Indias first major global exposure on the arthouse film circuit or whatever, at the same time Italy, Sweden, Japan and Krushchev Thaw-era USSR were finally carving out a very important piece of cinema for themselves again. the best era.

its still considered the greatest Indian film of all time to dust old film heads and on lists like this (this list is a really great reference when youre starting to dive deeper)

    theyshootpictures.com/gf1000_all1000films_table.php

you might not hear about it much in your circles because its Bengali which is apparently a pretty small niche of the Indian populace

when i feel more ready to enjoy 50s movies. maybe sometime kinda soon though. and yeah ive came across it and the trilogy its from in a lot of lists.

I think Bengali language still has a decent amount of cinema. any of the languages but Hindi are small niches of the Indian populace but for them its still equivalent to populations of France or Germany or something with their own unique subcultures. apparently only 8% of the population speaks Telugu but didnt stop them from surpasssing Hindi as the biggest blockbuster industry in the past few years

but have you seen Mother India which is an alleged masterpiece that predates that one and is a big landmark for them too

honestly kinda trying to avoid looking at it through the western lens that much too. I don't doubt that Apu trilogy is majorly classic both for Indian audience and global audience but I'm finding it more interesting to focus on what the classics are to them and what make the movies great for their style of the medium. also partially going through it with the music angle of realizing how important film music is to their music culture as a whole and digesting the soundtracks

noticed that after seeing some denigration of the more stereotypical Bollywood style by foreigners just because they dont get it and preferring the rare or dusty "arthouse" movies and not their staple cultural classics.

    that list's got Sholay though

Yeah I figured but it's still interesting to see both perspectives. You're already acclimated with india but it can help when you're trying to check out a new country's cinema. Find out which stepping stones have been historically effective for westerners.

Entire movie should’ve been warrior Drac. Not that sappy romance.

Warrior Drac when he finds out his wife is dead and stabs that crucifix Oldman was terrifying. Such badass armor.
