Oh boy I forgot this is a De Sica film. I'm hoping this is more cheerful than Umberto D.?

Interestingly I just watched Rebecca with my parents. Apparently, Hitchcock disliked the film and despised O. Selznick because he tried to impose his own vision on it in typical O. Selznick fashion. Which reminds me of this great video essay detailing the way O. Selznick butchered a film by De Sica.

In the end, the story of art is the story of human consciousness itself—a narrative of constant becoming. A world without art is reduced to a system of functional signs and survival, stripped of any nuance and vitality.
