Are you familiar with the phrase “elevated horror?”

John Carpenter: I don’t know what that means. I mean, I can guess what it means, but I don’t really know.

People usually use it to refer to A24’s movies, horror that’s very heavy on the metaphorical. Hereditary, Midsommar, movies like that.

John Carpenter: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

At this point i just pretend like that label never came into existence and completely ignore anyone who uses it with any amount of sincerity. I wish I could be like Carpenter and mean it when i say "I don't know what you're talking about", but I can do my best to pretend.

Insane that such an utterly meaningless, stupid label managed to become something that so many people actually believe is a real thing.

Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention but it’s probably the first time I’ve seen “elevated horror” to describe them haha

tbf there are a lot of run by the mill horror movies mass produced all the time available on Netflix. I guess they're just saying that because they are not necessarily as generic. That it is an insult to the genre's history is something they cannot know or just learn the genre via a false lense (internet does it's thing etc.).

Liked Midsommar more than HEreditary on first watch but it bored me on second tbh.

Get Out was good on rewatch tbh. After ignoring all the subtext discussion it actually was a good film imo.
