I may be in the minority but I've never liked Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It's still a classic though so worth reading. I've eased up on cosmic horror a bit and started coming around to Lovecraft.
You might also like Southern Gothic Horror. Faulkner has some good short stories in the genre, but one name I see come up anytime it's mentioned is Blackwater by Michael McDowell (I haven't read it)
Honestly a good place to start with horror could probably be short fiction. Thomas Ligotti is really prolific in the genre and of course Shirley Jackson. Ray Bradbury and Joyce Carol Oates have good stuff as well.

Tbh horror is not a genre of lit I'm that knowledgeable about. Actually the Hellbound Heart is quite good.

I read Thomas Ligotti's Songs of a Dead Dreamer collection a couple Octobers ago, really surreal cosmic horror vibes. Another book I read back in the day was called The Wasp Factory by Ian Banks that was weird one haha

But in recent memory this short story called The Pederson Kid by William H Gass was super unnerving. Brooding family drama set against a midwestern blizzard that just keeps getting more delirious. Idk if he's "horror" but you'd probably dig his work.

Yeah I’m fully expecting it I feel like the last 5 years or so summer and winter have been longer and fall and spring have been shorter, I hate it. Give me 60-75 degrees year round.

I feel like spring has been nonexistent. I swear there was one spring a couple years ago where it was cold for like three out of four months.
