Yeah well I can recognize Sketches and Brew are great but Love Supreme type stuff I can't even pretend I'd be able to recognize it as good or bad if I didnt already know about it

Ok well jazz is one genres that seems vastly open to interpretation and comes in so many amorphous shapes and sizes whos to say when it's bad or good. Compared to more pop structured genres we were discussing. The lack of vocals adds another huge element that makes them hard to compare.

I love some but alot is just noise and I can't imagine how somebody could rate/judge it.

The stuff I've heard from the 70s is getting very interesting though. Alice Coltrane etc. I guess the post Brew era.

Where do you draw the line between art rock and prog? Cause I wasnt thinking prog when I listened to that Ayers. I was thinking how much it must have influenced Eno.

i guess it can be borderline but Ayers still definitely canterbury which is prog. I think art rock is the ill defined term of the two. ive seen people call prog like King Crimson or Pink Floyd or even Genesis "art rock" in addition to prog. i feel like art rock has a lot to do with the presentation and is less complex and less jazzy/classical generally

i feel like most of canterbury stuff is way jazzier than stuff just called pure "art rock" and thats part of it.

without thinking too hard i'd feel like Kevin Ayers fits pretty nicely within both the art rock and prog rock labels. but hes still got that bit of progginess that you wouldn't feel much from Eno

Roxy might be like the other side of that where its "art rock" + glam for sure but still a touch of some prog

There’s a wide range of styles with Jazz tho, like post bop isn’t even comparable with free jazz. I guess you just have to let it catch you and enjoy the instruments. And like I said de album covers :datass:

I would say art rock is more abstract/conceptual and any average musician could pull it off. Not alot of prog musicians as proud as Roxy were about their "inspired amateurism".

on similar note i wouldnt really have any problem saying krautrock is "art rock" too as well as prog

don't think art rock is a very useful label overall though. feel like it just kinda exists as a label of a few people like Eno who you can't really categorize much. and people use it to describe Radiohead too.
