I'd describe their first three or four albums as Replacements meets Butthole Surfers and Floyd. They kept Floyd tho

Yeah Apple Music has these cool playlists for certain artists that have their influences and The Flaming Lips one has everything from Sonic Youth and Pink Floyd like Elric mentioned to ELO, Can, Yes, Butthole Surfers, The Beatles, and Yo La Tengo.

nice. i find it hard to believe that the same band made Hell's Angels Cracker Factory, Do You Realize? and The Terror.

i guess my favs usually change between Oh My Gawd, Telepathic Surgery and Clouds Taste Metallic. Soft Bulletin has a couple of my absolute favs by them. Zaireeka is also a bit underrated imo.

Some artists are so significant and influential that they can't really be overrated

Or, put another way, someone calling them overrated just looks ridiculous

true. sometimes im just not sure if they really are that good or if im just a stan.

like on my iTunes i make playlists for all my goats with all their good songs, and a second list for their Best-Of's (which are usually short enough for me to burn onto a cd)

Dylan, Radiohead and Kanye are the only ones out of hundreds that I gotta make a third Best-Of-The-Best-Of to actually cover all the insane highlights they've had across so many years they are relentless

I can see myself getting here with Nick and Tom one day

  • this was such a f***ing cool way to introduce a new project

probably NIN for Downward Spiral alone (The Fragile and the EPs are also amazing but that one has a "soft" spot in my heart.) Love that album to death.

    Otherwise,

    I guess

    Morphine
    Radiohead
    Magnetic FIelds
    Fugazi
    Flaming Lips
    Mercury Rev
    Built To Spill

ok yeah I was having a vague BTS and Radiohead feeling for you

Telepathic Surgery is the one I don’t quite connect with. I found the harder edge of it kind of phony feeling. Chrome Plated Suicide is cool tho. Wayne Coyne always seemed like a big softy at heart so trying to make that kind of tougher music just didn’t jive for me.

also couldn't think of you your fave band of the 90s would be. I know you have esoteric taste but also have no problem stanning the most popular bands. Maybe also Pulp?

You can tell alot about a person by asking who their favorite band of the 90s is as y'all probably know mine is Pulp.

    I suspect y'all got;

    Rise - Oasis maybe Pumpkins
    Fella, Lordie - Radiohead
Koala, Raise, Galaxy - Red House Painters
    Eric, Gordon - AIC
    Ponytail - Dino Jr
    RVI - XTC or something
Bizzle, VB - American Football or BTS or something

    Roughly in this order:

    Radiohead
    Beck
    Flaming Lips
    Pulp
    Elliott Smith
    Blur
    Super Furry Animals
    Built to Spill
    Modest Mouse
    Pavement

And honestly I'm a massive 90s U2 apologist, I think all of those albums are fascinating and wonderful, even Pop and their Passengers side project with Brian Eno. They were on a very different wavelength from most mainstream bands of the time.

    9. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
    10. Morphine or Mercury Rev

HM: OutKast, Cul de Sac, Liz Phair, Yo La Yengo, Tom Waits

i get what you're saying. It has that frantic structure revolving around Hell's Angels Cracker Factory, which is absolutely amazing imo. Without that song the album makes no sense to me. All the tracks before feel like precursors to that track and the later ones are the damaged aftermath.

    Outkast
    Flaming Lips
    U2
    Pulp
    Blur
    Super Furry Animals
    Built to Spill
    Modest Mouse
    Pavement

If And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out had dropped a year earlier, I would swap out Pavement for them.

I’ll have to revisit it with that in mind. That’s really interesting. I was kind of baffled when I saw Scaruffi rated it the highest in their discography. I generally don’t really care about his opinion on work I love (mostly like him for discovering new things), but I’m curious sometimes. However I wanna fight him over his Lemon Twigs takes.

You’ll have to check out that Robert Lester Folsom record then. It’s like his voice over warm 70’s production.
