I don't think he's that good of a musician or songwriter but it's cool this very regular guy blew up. If he takes some of that money and helps out his area and other local talent it'll say a lot.

That Belle & Sebastian album from earlier this year was sadly really overlooked.

I don’t normally care about lyrics but his lyrics absolutely kill that song. I haven’t heard the rest of the music but any nice chord progression or melody is ruined by lines about fudge rounds for fat people on welfare. I obviously disagree with the political framing there, but it’s more that they’re embarrassing lyrics that take you out of the song. I’m sure there’s even overt Nazi metal or punk songs that are easier to take in than whatever he’s trying to do. At the same time I think people are overreacting to the content and the accusation he’s a grifter seems silly. He just comes across like a regular guy with incoherent politics who happened to blow up over a song that resonated in the wrong way.

In fairness he quickly disowned that and argued that they’re the kind of people he was referring to negatively in the song. Still his politics are incoherent, but that’s most people.
