1999 feels like his purest artistic expression in some ways. His purplest album. still think Purple Rain is more cohesive but the extended funk workouts out 1999 feel so special. also i've arrived at the conclusion that Little Red Corvette is his best song

a custom rearranged double/triple/quadruple album version of Sign o the Times would be my #1 though. could even challenge for #1 if i could just delete mid ass 9-minute It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night

I listened to 1999 and Sign today and I would put a rejiggered Sign over Purple Rain as well maybe Play In The Sunshine way more annoying than Beautiful Night tho lol

I gotta say their last album annoyed me by being front loaded with absolute bangers and the second half being all ballads. Guess I should revisit but none of those slower songs did much for me. I still jam Happy New Year, Levitation and Hall of Mirrors all the time though
