I think this is just bullshit though. It's art. You should be able to express anything you want. You should know better than anyone since you're an Elvis fan and you know what cancel culture did to that man and how he was exploited due to it.

Comedy is meant to push boundaries and it's easily the most difficult art form because it literally is built on people taking swings in the dark repeatedly. When you try to put a line on that, it severely limits the artform and that's why there ain't anything funny anymore. We went from Superbad to Booksmart. That says it all

Idk I feel like if art has one job besides entertain it is to convey the truth to/about society and you don't necessarily have to bordeline offend everybody to do that. Even more impressive if you find a way to do it that shows real empathy and heart imo.

Colonel Tom used cancel culture to control Elvis. If art was truly free and expressive, Elvis would have no reason to keep Tom around and just see his ideas as bad.

You call it cancel culture I guess i call it public perception (and moreso his own personal greed)

I agree with all that and I agree art doesn't have to be offensive. But at the same time, many of the great artists were controversial and offensive. There is definitely a truth that a lot of art from the 60s and 70s, even the great art, couldn't be made today. S***, a comedy from the 00s couldn't be made today. And what do we have in place of that? A bunch of politically correct mid.

Don't you just feel gross calling it cancel culture though? There are other things to call it

And tbh sometimes mf's like Dali should've been cancelled or better yet blackballed which is what they used to call it when they wanted to get rid of well poisoners like Emil Jannings after the war

I mean the media wanted Elvis banned. I think public perception is apart of cancel culture anyway. Tom was clearly a greedy man, but without the media/public backing to ban Elvis, I doubt he would've felt pressured to adhere to Tom's ideas.

They wanted him banned for not adhering to traditional Christian values which is alot different than what the dog whistle of cancel culture implies from the dreaded liberals.

Tom economically manipulated the very naive Elvis in countless ways. It wasn't just society he had him worried about.

well blackballing is a pretty insensitive word as well because it has a racial connotation for historically snubbing people of color from opportunity.

I also don't think discrediting is what people are always trying to do. Nobody is really disputing somebody like Chappelle isn't talented. They just don't like what he's saying. Which is fine, not everybody has to like what you're making. I despise Amy Schumer's standup. But I'm not advocating for her to be cancelled.

    Dang should've known

Ironically Chapelle over the last few years is the only time I can ever remember being kinda when watching a comedian do "comedy" but I wasn't personally offended or wishing a cancel on him. Maybe just shut up though.

I'll ask again; who has actually effectively been cancelled?

Well cancel culture was different in the 50s compared to now. I don't really think what liberals find problematic nowadays is any less cancerous than not adhering to traditional Christian values.

It's definitely possible that Parker would've manipulated Elvis regardless since he did essentially take advantage of his kindness. But he got Elvis to trust him due to the idea that he made him think he was being protected by the mobs outside angry at his art.

I don't think cancelling ever happens in a black and white way. It usually just means you lose out on opportunities, but it doesn't mean you can't get an opportunity elsewhere, but the reality is, it will probably be a lesser one. That's what happened with Shane Gillis who lost his SNL gig or even with DaBaby (people will say its because his music was terrible, but his music was terrible even when he was gigantic). Gina Carano lost her whole acting career as well because of her political beliefs.

I've seen a few priceless sets from Shane but if he feels obligated to make edgy racial jokes than Lorne isn't obligated to hire him. If he made the jokes in front of a multiracial audiences and it was funny he would be fine but he made them on a podcast in front of his white friends probably. That's not standup comedy. Gina still has a career but not doing anything good cause she aggressively decided she didn't want to get along with the rest of the kids and Iger also was not obligated to keep her around (and she has half the acting talent that dababy has for rapping if we're talking about that. Was glad to see her wooden ass go)

Conservatives always complain about how Hollywood act like they know so much about the world and are so important but then they also cry when their celebrities opinions on f***ing medical science aren't taken seriously during a pandemic.

Pryor could still do his edgiest routine no problem because he was never punching down and his empathy was apparent. Don Rickles? Probably not. I doubt he would choose to retire instead of working within modern boundaries though. Like Katt says nobody likes them but they exist for a reason.

Getting "cancelled" for disagreeing with someone sounds pretty vague but I'm sure its always existed with another name like discredit or something.

That's just your interpretation on Pryor, trust me people will hear the jokes and think different. Today's culture is hyper sensitive because of social media etc, people hear a word and totally forget context. Tons of legendary comedians would get bashed. Dude two years ago Gone With the Wind was getting removed

And "cancel culture" can extend beyond celebrities, if you work an office job and say something somebody disagrees with its not unheard of to get a call from HR.

Well I think its moreso because its hypocritical. Leonardo DiCaprio can go around flying on private jets and talk down on everyone saying they need to do better with taking care of the environment. But Gina Carano makes a point about how it shouldn't be okay to target people because of their political beliefs and makes an insensitive comparison to the Holocaust and she's outta there? It's quite obvious someone like Leo does far more harm to the Earth than Gina. That's why conservatives complain about how Hollywood acts. It's okay to damage the world and society with stupid ass viewpoints and beliefs as long as you're saying "politically correct" s***. And that's what the general problem with cancel culture is.

Like Iger fires Gina Carano for speaking differing politics, the CEO of a company that in the last 10 years has been accused of religious, racial, and gender discrimination of its employees and is considered one of the worst corporations in the world to work for. In reality, Iger should have no issue with Gina because his corporation stands on the exact same principles as her with how shady they run things. They only fired her because they knew it'd look good for their image to fire her since she was a media topic. And that's the issue with Hollywood, corporations and cancel culture.

Considering the part that Birth Of A Nation played in restoring the Klan I'd say it's a slippery slope. GWTW is also pretty horrendous and I wouldnt be sad if they are least stopped promoting it as the paragon of old Hollywood. Call it what it is.

If you work at a place with a Human Recourses department (I haven't) I assume you wouldn't bother making edgy statements or jokes. If you mean slander that's something else isn't it?

Literally every person walking is complicit in the environment but not everyone has to go out of their way to inflame the climate surrounding trans/vax/whatever else she decided to comment on while holding a very high profile spot in a "lib" industry during a troubling time in our society.

I've seen both sides roast Leo for his hypocrisy. I saw promising Al Franken get actually "cancelled" by his own democratic party for doing something a little gross but that the conservative side would just sweep under the rug and laugh with him later over.

walking is very different from flying a private jet routinely. Come on lmfao. 99% of Americans in this country will go their entire lives and cause less damage to the environment on a total scale compared to just 1 month of private jet flying from Leo.

Leo gets roasted as if it's just a joke. And even then the liberals are actually pretty quiet relatively over it compared to the conservatives and less PC comedians.

Everybody has acknowledged his hypocrisy but i don't know if keeping on Leo about flying jets is getting to the core of the issue. We both agreed art has an obligation to convey truth so I don't think that one example means they should, as a monolithic unit of liberals, stop commenting on issues or pursuing philanthropic ventures. Celebrities have always had a weird influence and you just gotta call it out when it's bullshit. Probably best done through the actual art though that can.be corny too.

I think the backlash against Leo ironically was the catalyst that started these big conference holders over the environment to do them remotely lol

"The film has been criticized by black commentators since its release for its depiction of black people and "whitewashing" of the issue of slavery but, initially, newspapers controlled by white Americans did not report on these criticisms. Carlton Moss, a black dramatist, observed in an open letter that whereas The Birth of a Nation was a "frontal attack on American history and the Negro people", Gone with the Wind was a "rear attack on the same". He went on to characterize it as a "nostalgic plea for sympathy for a still-living cause of Southern reaction".

I think it's moreso that liberals are free to comment on issues and pursue philanthropic ventures. But liberals are different from other political groups in that when they criticize somebody or something, they do it from this holier-than-thou attitude that demands that this person or entity change as if it's God himself coming down and saying this is wrong and it must change. And that isn't always for clean cut problems like racism or homophobia. That can literally just be targeted towards someone like Kanye for once saying he was a "soldier" of culture because how dare he compare himself to an actual military soldier. When a conservative or libertarian criticizes somebody, often times they aren't demanding that person be cancelled or be forced to change because they understand that others will disagree with them or maybe say something the wrong way. Liberals are the type of people who will jump on somebody for saying NOTHING (like when Noname got on Kendrick and J Cole's back for not making a public statement after the whole George Floyd situation) and demand something from them as if they owe them or anybody s***.

So the backlash against Leo isn't necessarily because he flies private planes, but because he acts holier than thou and thinks he is in a position to lecture the American public about taking care of the environment.

Isn't it right there in the name conservative? Don't they conserve their and traditional way of life and wealth and consider any social progress and philanthropy to be socialism if not communism? They're playing a different game with different goals. It's time I admit I'm a pea brain low life that doesn't really know what he's talking about.

I just understand that Iger is selling a product and once Gina decided to make herself repellent to such a diverse group of customers it's pretty obvious why she had to go. She was making jokes on wearing masks and inflaming s*** around the time people were spitting on nurses and my partner is a nurse so f*** her.
