They call it that because it encompasses the different eras. That way they can sell Jodeci and Sam Cooke in the same genre

ElricHave you guys noticed how most of the people from Yesterday's Papers are super dismissive of R&B
other than real ass Steve Marriot almost all of them are literally like "oh, Motown they do the same old thing it's boring now" or "Otis Redding this is terrible he's just yelling"

The impact of soul music is way larger than what reggae or rap has done. And as impactful as Jazz is, there’s just so much more variety in the r&b genre
I'm with you. Alot of that Jamaican music was an offshoot of American r&b as well.
