Only Kanye and q tip match him in quality in both parts

I don't think he quite has the highs of Kanye (Cold Vein comes close even if he's not the featured artist), but he also hasn't had an obvious nose dive in quality like Kanye did in 2018-2019 (DONDA arguably was also rather inconsistent.) As for Q-Tip, I've not ever listened to his solo stuff (I've heard The Renaissance is great), but obviously ATCQ is great and his production is always reallyy good too (though I would take both Kanye and El-P at their peaks over him in that department.)

I guess I’m realizing one of my issues with Piper is that Syd doesn’t really have the melodic sensibilities for that kind of psych music. He’s much better for me solo because he’s lost and deranged sounding and it works when he’s intimately the focus but less so when there’s a band of ambitious musicians around him trying to tap into a style. Matilda Mother is the one where it all kinda lines up for me. Then I’ll listen to something like this and realize I like it more than most of Piper.

I still really like Piper, it made my list after all, but it just doesn’t fully connect with me the way it seems to with a lot of you.

Yeah Matilda Mother is immaculate but still has some jarring moments to keep it from getting too pretty. Even more than Sgt Pepper (or any other '67 album) i think Piper created its own internal logic on every song that really made it feel like you were stepping into another world for a little bit. Roger said they only stood out at the time because they didnt know how to play the blues and their jazz influence was so mutated through Syd's lens it worked tremendously toward the album feeling like its own unique experience. Confident it will click for you eventually.
