I don’t really get the high praise for Exile On Main St. Most of the songs are very samey and feel unfinished. I get the appeal of rough around the edges jamming but not when most of it is indistinguishable. The songs that stand out are the slower ones and even those aren’t like top tier Stones. It’s all pleasant enough, not really a bad song. It’s just bloated and a little bland in parts.

i dont think its very samey at all considering the breadth of styles they achieved, i think it still just fits extremely well together as a whole. and wym unfinished?

Many songs feel like rough drafts. Like it has this live quality to it where they’re just figuring it out as they go along.

rough drafts how though? like do you think they need more stuff added or just dont like the even rootsier style of songwriting which can just seem simpler sometimes
I generally prefer their 60’s work overall. I guess I just don’t like their core sound, I liked it better when they were emulating what was around them. Their supposed “failed” attempt at psychedelia is much more interesting to me than anything on Exile.

The latter. It feels messy and muddy which again I get is part of the appeal. It’s just not my cup of tea.

I can’t go that far. I like it fine enough. Just don’t think it’s “the greatest rock n roll album of all time” as it’s often lauded by various outlets. I respect the bold take though.

I Just Wanna See His Face
I knew that one would be your favorite. Only one I didn’t add to my Rolling Stones playlist. My criteria for adding is just “would I mind listening to it again”.
