You finally had me thinking your point was fair about Imagine and then you say this. Damnit bro lol
Never cared about Queen but cant help but respect Freddie Mercury's boldness

You really think either of those guys would've agreed to that
Dylan and George had a collab around then
but George was the non-cunt of the songwriting beedles
Honestly if someone could pull off a big melodramatic piano ballad like that around this time it would have been Brian Wilson. I think he’d have made that melody soar without sounding cheap.
I'd rather Brian crush my soul with DITLOAT type things
Why not
Cause the premise of the song is super lame and they didnt seem like close friends except for that one time they got loaded in the back of a cab in the 60s
But I'm just making assumptions

They were pals but lennons ego and stature probably made it harder for them to be as comfortable as George and Bob were

George always seemed like the coolest Beatle
Imagine does have a ridiculously beautiful melody and vocal just too bad he decided clobber you with such straightforward and impossibly idealistic lyrics. Should've got Dylan to help him finesse it.
John was so the opposite of finesse at the time. From his protest stuff to therapy songs like Mother, he was straight up hammering lyrics in there. Imagine takes on just a little too much.
Hot take, but I think Isolation was the best song he wrote in the early 70s. The bridge makes me cry every time. It takes all of the social angst of Working Class Hero and puts it in a love song.
@HeyFella @drjdeponytail
What do you think of the new Will Sheff solo track? Seems alright to me but I feel like it lacks the bite of the best Okkervil River songs
!https://youtu.be/ph-zatqd8GoI agree with your assessment. Tbh, Okkervil River R.I.P. is the only post-The Stand Ins song that I think is on par with their best stuff
I will admit though that when all those celebs sang Imagine back when covid started I actually despised the song. When I think about it divorced of all of its context I think it’s totally fine.
that was f***ing hilarious
That's not that much of an achievement really, Imagine is one of the worst songs ever written
that was f***ing hilarious
Did you listen to the song Mike Love put out around the same time?
Nah
Thinking about you listening to imagine and a single tear rolling down your cheek as you consider all the injustice in the world

Nope. I’m just not trying too hard.

I was going to chime in and say that "Imagine" on its own is a harmless, airy tune that's just fine. What makes its awful is when it's used seriously as a vehicle for a social/political message, or to seriously persuade people to come together (no pun intended), which has been a common thing to see over the past 40 years.
It doesn't help that the song's very broad content makes it extremely easy for any person or PR group to appropriate to try pandering to LCDs. That just makes it easier to turn around and criticize the song itself as vague lyrical nonsense.
If "Imagine" hadn't become such a keystone for pop-culture and PR, I'm sure the writing/subject matter wouldn't be dismissed much in that way. Lennon and Ono's image as a political/social activists probably doesn't help its case either — compared to them being so vocal and direct about issues in public, the song comes across as a what would now be a run-of-the-mill, radlib grievance Tweet.
I still agree that the song is fine removed from any pop-culture context. But i don't think saying it's trash or s***ty is necessarily a boring take either.
The real boring take is the countless people who still villify and mock Yoko Ono's music and role in Lennon's/Beatles' trajectory.

That first bit is my point. I feel like the actual song has been ruined by its use and I guess that use is a result of its initial misguided intent.
Also, we really in here talking biut "Imagine"/Beatles? What's next, ranking Kanye and Tarantino projects?
