Poor Poland caught between Russian and Germany

Beksinski eschewed the use of metaphor, that's why all his works were untitled. With that being said the paintings themselves capture the war-torn Eastern European landscape as well as any photograph I've seen. I wonder what are some other good artworks that depict the trauma of war. Most famously Picasso's Guernica and Goya's Third of May.

    And there's this one:

As soon as you said "I wonder what some other" my brain went to Guernica before I read it lol but that's about all I can think of atm. and his depiction definitely doesnt come across nearly as grim.

Mr. Suttree it is our understanding that at curfew rightly decreed by law and in that hour wherein night draws to its proper close and the new day commences and contrary to conduct befitting a person of your station you betook yourself to various low places within the shire of McAnally and there did squander several ensuing years in the company of thieves, derelicts, miscreants, pariahs, poltroons, spalpeens, curmudgeons, clotpolls, murderers, gamblers, bawds, w****s, trulls, brigands, topers, tosspots, sots and archsots, lobcocks, smellsmocks, runagates, rakes, and other assorted and felonious debauchees.

    I was drunk, cried Suttree.

So much of his art really does feel like you're looking at something forbidden that you're just not meant to be seeing. What has to happen in a person's life to go from painting things like this...

    to this...

although if you really want to see his most horrifying stuff check out his black/white etchings/engravings from a series called Los Desastres de la Guerra (The Disasters of War). They're probably worse than the Black Paintings

Yeah Goya hits way harder than something like The Guernica. Although it is cool as a piece of art, I saw it up close as a kid.
