i still kinda hear some roots and if that is "pure" then I feel something like Louie Louie is on the same level. and even then its 1 or 2 songs like that surrounded by the rest of their output in the earliest era which is different

honestly i just gotta go with the explanation of Beatles being the main ones to take it from rock and roll -> just rock and solidify it. i cant think of anything before Rubber Soul really that has less obvious influence from the R&B,rockabilly,blues side.

yes i know What Goes On exists but that feels like more of a country excursion than a country influenced rock and roll song like Buddy Holly or something

not a fan of the "pure" discussion though and shouldnt have used that word in the first place, its too hard to define

Yeah wasn't sure if you were regarding him as a "lyricist" instead or something

Liverpewl lads were a 2 headed (sometimes 4) songwriting monster so it's not even fair to compare them to Ray and Bob who wrote everything alone. I don't think I would put any Beatle by himself over them.
