ElricRichard made music in all sorts of genres just like Elvis and everybody but they're still rock and rollers
people considered Ray Charles part of the rock and roll wave at first too came what he was doing was so new and energetic. much like the country music guys they werent worried about specific labels and merged jazz, folk or gospel and whatever they felt like with their country. the nerds writing about it were were the only ones getting their panties in a twist about specific genres labels and thats why generational labels work for guys that dipped into a bunch of styles.yeah there is a point where the specific labeling is too much but there's also the opposite side where words cease to have any meaningful definition which makes trying to discuss it a lot harder. and i never got my panties in a twist anyway, just said i didnt want to rank Fats with all the pure rock and rollers and i know im not the only one who thinks that even though some people disagree

im just not going to include someone on a list of rock and rollers if I don't think a majority of their music of that period is rock and roll

You Really Got Me feels like the first "pure" rock and roll song to me. Doesn't sound black or white or like country or blues or jazz or anything. I'm sure a musician would tell me otherwise but.

I guess if you just looked at their hits you could say Chuck and Richard are the closest thing to pure rock and roll but everybody else back then was pretty clearly heavily influenced by the blues or country or even jazz (Heartbreak Hotel)

The problem isn’t his use of the word, it’s his disgust with gay people themselves thinking they could literally infect him by touching the same food as him. He could have just called them homosexuals and it would have still been bad. The main thing though is I don’t care generally cause it doesn’t effect the art. Some of your favs probably f***ed 14 year olds. They’re all “bad people” if you wanna go through their closet. Saying you can sense their sins spiritually through their art is weird as hell.

i still kinda hear some roots and if that is "pure" then I feel something like Louie Louie is on the same level. and even then its 1 or 2 songs like that surrounded by the rest of their output in the earliest era which is different
honestly i just gotta go with the explanation of Beatles being the main ones to take it from rock and roll -> just rock and solidify it. i cant think of anything before Rubber Soul really that has less obvious influence from the R&B,rockabilly,blues side.
yes i know What Goes On exists but that feels like more of a country excursion than a country influenced rock and roll song like Buddy Holly or something

Yeah you could give it to Louie Louie but that was clearly a fluke by some guys that just moved on with their lives whereas The Kinks continued to shape the trends of popular music for the rest of the decade

if were giving it to a whole album then sure. dylan wasnt as focused on pushing things forward on a strictly musical basis.

maybe we should since the rise of the album basically coincides with the removal of "& roll" and the full maturation of the genre
more meant to give to the band as a whole though instead of just a few songs of their output.
