I remember playing some Pumpkins once and my metalhead coworker said something like "Smashing Pumpkins are one of the few indie bands I like" which made me go "wat" but listening to a lot of 2000s indie bands it's clear how strong the influence was.

Yeah Corgan took the progressive rock symphony thing and added actual balls to it. Arcade Fire added Springsteen to it. When Funeral came out Bowie was an early champion that talked about them a ton and bought copies for everyone he knew and did a live version of a song with them
