he's also quite literally the worst rapper of all time

I can’t say I totally understood everything Europa was attempting to do but the reviews I’ve read claiming it’s just shallow references and show-offy tricks couldn’t be further from the truth. It feels so singular and distinct. One of the most immediately transcendent cinematic experiences I’ve had in a while. That being said I’m curious how some people actually read what’s being communicated. @Aruji ?
By the way have you seen French Dispatch yet?

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89wsFMqz56krap must be one of the hardest genres to pull off successfully just based on the amount of abysmal s*** I always see/hear like this. So funny when a tone-deaf celebrity with no musical talent tries making music.

I think the larger and obvious allegory is that evil cannot suddenly disappear and will actually function like a swamp that consumes even the most innocent and kind-hearted souls (if it's way too ubiqutous). One could even argue that's a warning to the allied forces who can be read as Leo to some extent. Then again, the films was released in 1991 (also a time when many parts of the German left and Europe were scared of the reunification of the German states leading to a revival of Nazi Germany).
Spoiler! (tags didn't work for some reason)
However, one of the major themes is deception and what actually lies beneath the surface. Be it guilt and shame of what has happened (The scene in which von Trier plays the jew who gives the "Persilschein". A term often used when it comes the ineffective denazification attempts after WW2. Germany was needed as a block against the Soviet Union and vice versa. Therefore many Nazis who were in control of structually important companies were given absolution/whitewashing for/of their crimes. That bill was called Persilschein in reminiscence of that brand (the GDR was initially more effective in doing so but many people who were active in the country's secret police were former Nazi officials and the country later said that because they were socialist there could be no fascism. Therefore calling open young Post-War Nazis "Rowdys" instead of what they actually were.) Also, one of the major questions about the Post-War times was how so many people couldn't be aware of what actually happened (Holocaust). A sort of emotional displacement about what might have happened back then or knowing that it happened but not wanting to talk about it because they secretly believed the genocide was justified. It was simply impossible to actually find out what was going on in many people's heads. In fact, even until 1985 the West German parliament debated if 8th of May should be called the "day of liberation" or "the day of Germany's ultimate defeat".The latter obviously implying a mourning about Nazi Germany's defeat. While many Nazis were still politically active and powerful people in German society albeit not always that open in the expression of their beliefs.
Werewolf were a real Post-war group of Nazis who were trying to rebuilt the Third Reich via murders etc..
Von Trier tackles these tendencies of Post-War Germany rather slightly but does so to create that ominous atmosphere of something simply being to right. Therefore making a point about the influence of ideologies. They cannot be replaced from one day to another. Rather, the influences people's actions to their core even though there often is definitely a confusion of how to act when them being so openly represented as wrong. It's a deeply moral film there.
Leo, however, is the innocent soul who tries to act to his own rightful beliefs but just cannot survive as a single person among these deeply corrupted structures. He wants to believe in the good of people but cannot resist the evil that still surrounds them. Here, Von Trier, goes into pure Kafka territory and makes a psychological drama/thriller out of it. The amazing montages reflecting his moral and psychological confusions to a point of chaos (he becomes corrupted himself). In the end he makes a decision that might be for the better but unknowingly sacrifices himself with that. Even if he did the right thing there was no real way out. Or at least, not in that moment of time. That's my basic reading of the film with a bit of historical context thrown it.
As for the critics. I think they simply wanted a more concrete von Trier but that's not necessarily how he used to work here and I think it's to the film's benefit. They often forget that art can be stronger when it poses questions and remains rather ambiguous imo. And... film is a visual medium first and foremost imo. I've often seen some people say these things (show-off) about visually impressive films.
Spoiler end
Also, glad to see you loved it.
Not yet but it's on my list. I want to go through a few 2021 films for the next couple weeks.

Quality of rap depends on who’s listening
That classic southern rap Y’all love was getting no love in the north East
@Aruji Thank you, that was a pretty brilliant reading of the film. It really helped to sort of draw out a deeper understanding of it for me, especially on an historical level. I was mesmerized mostly by its images and the little glimmers of warmth in them. when color is used it’s very poignant in exposing an emotion on peoples faces whether it’s a realization of death or love. Politically I read it as a sad highlight of our inability to opt of oppressive systems. We’re thrust into being an agent of what we’re apart of or we drift aimlessly to nowhere. The priest earlier in the film brings this idea up and later again when it’s argued the true criminal is the one who does not choose. Even if you make the right choice you’re still punished or sacrificed by the mechanisms intrinsic to the side you chose.

Props to Joe Burrow, dude went to the Bengals, tore his knee last year, and turned the team around. Exciting to watch too, granted I only seen like 2 Bengal games haha

nice to see a good young QB who slings the ball downfield instead of dinking and dunking every drive

I've never seen European Gigalo but the first one was one of my staple movies as a kid. Seen it like a hundred times haha.
Finally finished that Eva series and decided to start the movie and within the first minute there’s a pair of b**** floppin out in what’s supposed to be a dramatic sad scene in a hospital and I think it’s implied the main character c****after seeing them. Lmao even for me that was a bit much.
The writing on this show was nuts
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmeB0KBbPoAHe's right about the pursuit of happiness, bunch of spoiled brats
and this was around S2 I think so its an early episode. She mentions the shark and antisocial personalities but the writing counters with mentioning Richie who's a true sociopath in every way.
