spirit of eden’s a side is overall stronger but laughing stock is the better album
SoE Side 2 slander
Laughing Stock is good but I don’t really feel like they built upon the sound of SoE much and took a bit of a step backwards songwriting wise.
You heard Mark Hollis solo album?
I haven’t but I plan on listening to it after I’m done going back through their discography. I’m on Spirit of Eden again.
SoE Side 2 slander
i don’t dislike side b at all i just don’t think it’s as good as rainbow/eden/desire
I love Cocteau Twins so much
even when Liz Fraser is speaking somewhere between Gaelic and Wingdings font
I actually think they've progressed somewhat and managed to embed the giant choruses into the post-rock/slow-core constructions a bit better and as rvi already said is a bit more textural. However, these choruses absolutely slay on Spirit of Eden while they work less often on Laughing Stock imo.
Spirit of Eden has made me cry and Laughing Stock hasn’t, that’s gotta count for something. It’s really good but there’s not as much to latch onto if that makes sense. Like just the ethereal children's choir in I Believe In You hits so hard in a way nothing trapped in the more spacious atmosphere of the next record does.
Spirit of Eden last 2 songs is a legendary gut-punch of a combo and is enough in itself for me to put it above any other Talk Talk
i can understand people being bored by Myrrhman, Taphead, and Runeii but eventually they just clicked for me as part of the whole package. im not out here just blasting Taphead on its own but it accentuates both of the album's highlights before and after it
Ascension Day might be my fave Talk Talk song, the jazzy drums and driving guitar riff

youre the first person ive ever seen praise wealth tbh
I Believe in You maybe their best song for me tho

That mid 80s EP run is untouchable
i think both made me cry at some point
Well I haven’t heard it in a while, so maybe it will this time.
if a relisten proves me wrong, slap me as hard as you can

I actually used to think Wealth was their best song before I Believe in You struck me like no other and catapulted into top 10-15 all time category
Spirit of Eden, After The Flood, I Believe In You, Living in Another World, It's My Life and Ascension Day my favorite Talk Talk songs I guess
While I have been listening to a lot of 80s stuff to re-order my list, I've yet to re-listen to SoE, though I haven't kicked it out of my top 5. Gonna def listen again ASAP

I think that After The Flood matches I Believe In You's beauty albeit in a different way more subdued manner. Overall, I'd agree. Laughing Stock is even a bit too laid back to really catch me as deeply as Spirit of Eden.

Ohyeah, After the Flood would contend for a top 100 song if I went to those lengths
damn, i didnt realize that the Morphine drummer Billy Conway died a few days ago, RIP
(maybe someone already mentioned itt)

Okay gonna listen to Spirit of Eden now after talking about it this much.
Still 10/10
I don’t know why exactly but I would have loved to hear Mark Hollis cover Motion Picture Soundtrack. Just picturing his really distinct voice just quietly going “reeeeeeed wine” lol
The editing in modern blockbusters now is so transparent that it’s compensating or attempting to correct for people who get distracted and look at their phones. Rarely anything feels big cause you never have time to sit with a scene. It’s why despite feeling a bit empty after watching Dune, I appreciated it’s David Lean sense of weight. Same with the new Bond tbh.
yes, as a professional video editor this is something I notice just about every time I go see a film that is over-edited. some films are unbearable to watch
