No, that too. I was wondering if you ever knew how people heard all those ‘50s legends and called it “rock n roll”

It’s something I thought about listening to an Elvis song awhile ago

i mean i thought it just basically evolved from the term meaning dancing (+sex?) or something, and used in some of the older songs like this that obv arent rock music themselves.

had to google refresh my memory but yeah it was popularized heavily by the influential DJ Alan Freed. as for when it lost the roll, i just thought of it mostly as it distanced further from rhythm&blues.

honestly if theres anyone who took away the "roll" its probably Beatles as they reached the mature period. Please Please Me vs. Rubber Soul you can easily see how the former contains roll but the latter is developed further. not sure when they actually started saying it more without the roll though. because im sure in the mid 60s everyone was still saying rock and roll more than just rock.

feel like a lot of the stuff labeled sometimes as "rock and roll" earliest on just falls much better under the rhythm & blues category. like people would call the Ike Turner Rocket 88 song as one of the first rock and roll songs but I don't think its truly separated enough from 40s rhythm & blues to be bonafide rock and roll. and @Elric might disagree with me on this one but I barely consider Fats Domino a rock and roller, except on maybe a few songs. like some people call The Fat Man the first million selling rock record but to me thats just pure rhythm and blues

    Good post
I figured that all those super early R&B artists were using that term
I agree with your last point but I think it’s the music community trying to honor the legacy of those who influenced them.
