ofc one of those cases where a catalog is appreciated more after the release, and younger listeners like him. but like if you went back to 1980 and asked a bunch of randoms who was the most culturally relevant/defining music act of the whole 70s, i dont think many people would say Bowie. but if you polled a bunch of internet zoomers they'd perceive him as the very top level

also some level of UK popularity vs. US popularity vs. everywhere else that makes it harder to judge too. like he always did well everywhere unlike some but if you asked my parents about how big/important he was they would only know a few songs

Idk man i talk to alot of geezers in person on construction sites and stuff and it's either Bowie or Zeppelin. And alot of the boomers that worshipped Ziggy aren't even aware of Low and Station. And a lot of the hipsters punks looked down on the Ziggy era but worship the later stuff. Like I said Thurston Moore claim Neil Young and Bowie were like the only 60s dinosaurs they respected. And I know from a lot of different sources that Bowie's fame and mystique hit the all time zenith rockers ever achieve around 73 (see Almost Famous for one) Media hounding him on both sides of the pond. That's why Young Americans was basically his Tonight's The Night and the beginning of his unofficial ditch trilogy.

The Josh singles are amongst the most overplayed songs in my lifetime so I only listen for Exit and Bullet

critics definitely sketchy when they try to sell certain narratives to be cool though. hes not a critic but I think of Thurston type people from punk background who only uphold a few "dinosaurs" and disregard the rest as insignificant. some of those people really live in a fantasy world where punk was the most important music development in history and everything centers around coolness

I think back when things were so fractured and you were only able to get exposed to so much and what you're getting exposed to was such garbage for so long that punk would have been such a breath of fresh air but I don't think you can overstate it from their perspective

Also I think maybe you get off too much on the epic instrumental wankery to understand how impossible it was for kids to relate to it
