@Elric don't read this or anyone who hasn't seen the film and doesn't want it spoiled.

here are some thoughts after my second viewing:

    -adulthood looks exhausting
    -Rowlands is electric, as always
-Cassavetes handling existential mid-life dread very well, as always
-Cassavetes seems to be overflowing with ideas, both thematically and formally, the performances are complex and the subtext is never singular. Very fun stuff.
-With the characters in his universe there seems to always be a severe failure of communication (or is it understanding? or is it empathy?) that only exacerbates the situation they are in.
-Surprised by the clash between realism and surrealism, was not expecting this. Folm really turned into fight club 2/3s of the way in.
-Just like in Woman Under, Rowlands character's reaction to the events around her often seem to be the most genuine, despite her being perceived as the "crazy" one.
-The film, although perhaps not as daring as Faces, is still quite inventive, love how he's not afraid to get really close and personal with the camera...
-Birdman vibes, although I liked it better than birdman.
-Really loved the ending. Cassavetes endings always reach a level of pathos and empathy for the characters he creates despite the hell that they go through.

I saw a lot of people frustrated with the ambiguity of the ending, but for me it was pretty clear (I could be wrong though). Myrtle is invested in the play in the same way she is invested in her life (which is breaking down completely in front of us.) She criticizes the play for lacking hope - "there has to be more when two people have cared for each other for a long time besides agony"
Her decision to go against the scripted ending (an ending that she finds humiliating) and improvise a happy ending seemed to me to be her way of rebelling against the tragedy of her life.

It's unfortunate that the film didn't get a lot of recognition in its day, here's a great clip of Cassavetes defending the film as a masterpiece for 8 minutes

(vid gets real juicy 5 minutes in)

first off that clip is incredible and just makes me like him more lol. the dude was passionate and confident about his work gotta give him that.

and honestly you hit on the nail on the head with your points. One of the interesting parts I found about the ending too was the reaction's (or lack thereof) from the producer/writer and Manny. You would assume they'd be upset right? I got the feeling that they might've been "relieved" so to say that opening night was finally over and that they didn't have to deal with the crisis Rowlands was going through (or at the least that the play went well enough)
Also Maurice initially tells Myrtle that he won't botch the play, but obviously that changed...but why? maybe he realized that Myrtle needed this and that going along with her improv would be the best decision (which it turned out to be).

the final improv could be a kind of way of saying "fuck the script", not because they don't believe in the play (as you mentioned), but rather to finally succumb to Myrtle's crisis and let her act (she mentions many times that she's just an actor). Like you said Rowlands seems to have the most natural reactions to events out of anyone in the film, which goes back to the original script (he natural reaction that she doesnt want to play someone old, of course she wouldn't). In the end I think Maurice's decision to go along with Myrtle was the final act of empathy that she needed.

Apparently Cassavetes mentioned that he never told the live audience how to react to the play so he's in fact challenging an audience while he's challenging the viewer which kind of wowed me. This is honestly one of the most ambitious films I've seen in terms of evoking the audience with empathy, which is in part due to Rowland's performance, but Myrtle being afraid of losing her youth is just the tip of the iceberg with this film.

There's a lot to think about with this one

why not? I still have to watch a few Cassavetes films (namely Faces, Love Streams, the one after that and Chinese Bookie).

btw Gloria is underrated too. So far my third fav after Opening Night and A Woman under the Influence. Kinda like a proto Leon the Professional with Gena Rowlands as Leon.

    Lol I was thinking that

Listening to New Adventures in Hi-Fi and I get the impression the track New Test Leper was inspired by them becoming friends with Radiohead. Where they touring together around that time?

Edit: actually a good chunk of the album is like this lol
