Main point is it's just weirdly disregarding the African diasporic influence which is the actual main root of modern Western dance music. Throughout the USA and Latin America the key blend, especially for dance music, came from the African rhythmic elements. The reality is that indigenous styles of music had a much more limited influence on the development of Western music comparatively. I'd assume by Western dance canon they mean styles like house, techno, disco, funk, jazz. None of which are rooted in the folk music of indigenous peoples and it should be clear where they are actually rooted. Then there's also the important societal and spiritual aspects coming directly from Black American and Afro-Latin American music too.
Syncopated rhythms were present in European music for hundreds of years priors even if the emphasis and approach was a lot different. But again, it's African elements that provided that influence that's the key basis for modern Western dance music.
There's also a lot to a "Western canon of dance music" that predates colonization of the Americas but maybe that's kinda nitpicky, I think I get what they mean.
Indigenous American styles of music have a ton of things to be celebrated for and areas of underrated influence and value. Big part of why this project is so cool. But that Pitchfork blurb just gets it wrong
Good points
All the little details and background vocals in track 2 make it so evocative of a specific scene in my head, I'm transported to a densely packed dimly lit basement club with the speakers blasting waiting in line to use the sole bathroom.
