Stuff that isn't fast food and made to expire in 2 weeks.
hmmm. i guess i can see that from the first paragraph in the article. but it seems like he's talking about two different things at once to me.
first he talks about the lack of sophistication in music and computerized songmaking, which would validate the fast food argument.
but mostly his focus seems to be on songwriters who work primarily by themselves, which would have nothing to do with the lasting effect of a song. interesting either way.
ok so i did interpret it correctly. that's a fair observation but i mean...they're still real songs lol his word choice is interesting.
tbf he's old, you know old people start with mixed up words and go from there
it seemed like he started at real songs, then his next sentence clarified what he means.
most of the songs on the top 50 on spotify have been there for more than 2 weeks 🤔
Theres multiple reasons for that though
I disagree with Elton here, but Elton is a legend, don't want to hear any disrespect
Elton got classics
idk about the UK pop scene (which is what it seems he's talking about) so I can't comment on his take on that, but I don't think its about hip hop considering how supportive he's been of it in the recent past
it's odd cos when i was trying to think of popstars who could write, the most obvious and talented example is Calvin Harris, who's from the UK. And Charli XCX has proven that she can write probably above the amount someone from his era like Rod Stewart used to, even tho she covers songs like Boys too

i just read the full quote and he's obviously not talking about hip hop.
He's mostly talking about UK music... and saying that there's nobody on the charts who can write a song without any help. he's objectively right there, and that is a shame that this era doesn't have big songwriters who are artists
i think you can argue that rappers like Kendrick are the modern version of that. In pop tho there are artists like Calvin Harris who still write on their own and people like Taylor used to. And you've got producer artists like Pharrell
Some people just don’t have that type of talent to compose and write songs like that. It is disappointing we don’t have bigger names with writing credits like that tho,the biggest names don’t write and they don’t have to cause that’s not usually the reason why their famous in the first place.

Exactly. Elton has proved he’s one of the best of all time. He can voice this kinds of opinions. I don’t agree with him but he’s passed so many levels. Elton is a king.

yeah, but don't you think there would be something good culturally in having artists like Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Jagger/Richards, Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan, Carole King etc.
Who could drop and compete with every other artist with their songwriting alone?
But from everything we know, someone like Kendrick is the modern equivalent to that. Like Ye said rap the new rock n roll

yeah lol that and i was about to respond to your last reply to me, about how things were different in his era. definitely a factor, and this isn't really too different from some criticisms people have today with certain artists. it really was just the way he worded it but it's a valid observation.
specifically the part about how "bits and pieces" make up a song. i immediately thought of beyonce's writing camps where she takes a verse here, a bridge there and puts it all together from several different songwriters. still makes for excellent music, but I get his viewpoint on it.
art is a collaborative process
it can be. and it was for him.
he's basically just saying y'all are doing too much and not enough lol

but that's also why i just can't see Beyonce as some genius on the level of Kate Bush or Carole King. or even mia, missy elliot or amy winehouse tbh lol.
Even people who did a lot of covers like Nina Simone, have written some of their best material and made incredible arrangements of traditional songs
beyonce has the gift that she can make things the dream writes sound good but that doesn't make you james brown or prince lol.
there's an argument that some singers put a twist on a song to the point they've created through arrangement. But is singing really creating or just performing someone else's art
same with most popstars rn RiRi, bieber etc.
