Twitter had a negative debt paydown yield prior to this too already

Clearly this man is the genius that the marketing department claims him to be.

These billionaire Ls are getting pretty sweet, I’m not gonna lie, even if the long term implications are probably not great.

debt paydown yield is the change in how much debt a company has outstanding relative to their market cap (overall value) between quarters of a year.

basically like, how well a company in handling paying debt vs taking on more debt relative to the company's actual overall valuation. if the yield is really high (say 20% or something), it means the company is paying off it's debt - the higher the number the more aggressive it's being paid off.

if it's negative, it means the debt is increasing relative to that percentage rather than being paid off. so basically, combined with losing money in quarters, twitter was also racking up debt rather than paying it off.

this isn't inherently a bad thing, companies have large amounts of outstanding debt all the time, but on top of this ever increasing debt twitter was also between quarters losing money - so their debt was being raised at the same time they were losing money.

then elon comes in and incurs basically a historic amount of debt on top of what was already in existence despite the company already having so much debt they weren't able to pay it off relative to what revenue they were making regardless

i don't think he's a complete idiot to walk into something with this many billions that misinformed. usually deals like this may have musk or whatever as figureheads, but it's really a large group of financers, advisors, etc. who convene to discuss this things - for example both the Saudi government & Larry Ellison (co-founder of Oracle) also helped finance this deal; it's not just musk. And this isn't counting probably the myriads of lawyers, accontants, etc. who had to look over documents. So this was all in the open, I highly doubt this caught him by surprise.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if they got strongarmed into the deal with not paying as much attention to debt relative to paperwork filing. Musk tried to drop the deal like a bunch of times and was taken to court over it, so it is possible he did panic at first before securing the co-financing.

However, incurring this much debt on top of such a poor business already really does show everyone involved in financing has ulterior motives (probably obvious but regardless) but the company is barely sustainable even w/o the additional debt no less with it now

The saudi goverment being involved in this cant be a good thing right?

theyre trying to emulate china's foreign investment strategy to compensate for oil markets slowly being phased out (on the super long term) so it's mainly a symptom of that, wouldn't overthink it

community guidelines are more of a liability thing rather than censoring speech, to cover your ass when something goes very wrong when someone does something on your site that doesn't look good

if you're still consumed by the culture wars of 2016-2018, then yeah probably. but if you're a normal person then nothing is really gonna change
