bro getting f***ed up by the weakest enemies in the game
S*** happens, I died more times in Undead Burg than anywhere else in DS1
I mean i get It, if you prefer the more meticolously designed areas of classic souls and Legacy dungeons, the open world while having a better design than 90% of open worlds wont cut it. Elden ring's freedom also prevents from software from perfectly balancing the game's difficulty. And elden ring because of its gigantic map can get repetitive and boring. I disagree with most of these because i do love its open world, but i can see It not resonating as well with others. I do agree from has to keep the souls formula fresh by switching things up after a while. I love ds3 but its so "derivative" and "unambitious" It almost becomes parody, although it smartly avoids that at the end of the day (couldnt find better terms than the ones ive put in brackets, in my mind they wouldnt be as negative as they seem, but there is some truth to it).
The worst takes ive read though were on the main bosses that either misunderstood how bosses were designed or were just plain wrong - for example delayed attacks being somehow objectively bad when its the perfect answer to the roll spam that was majority of ds3, and bosses not leaving enough openings which is also false because if you learn to position yourself well against them or use items to fish some specific attacks they become pretty intuitive and fun, plus making drinking estus a strategic play and not just standing there and chugging since compared at least to ds1 and 2 ds3 was way more demanding. also nevermind how dancer, sullyvahn and in a way gael were proto elden ring bosses but nobody criticized them
Everyone jerks off interconnected level design (me too tho) but they’ve literally only done it immaculately once, with DS1. DS2 I appreciate because of the sprawling nature and various paths you can take from the start, DS3 instantly has you teleporting everywhere and BB is interconnected well but never reaches the perfection of DS1 and taking the elevator from undead burg back to firelink.
Their level design is fantastic overall but they’ve never come close to the verticality perfection they had in DS1, and I don’t mind them moving forward and going in new directions like ER. And it’s not like Elden ring isn’t interconnected either, s*** is very well connected and more like an actual land that doesn’t need a “space and time is convoluted” theory to hold everything together.

30-40. Eventually wanna hit at least 50 before you get to the later areas.
20 is fine for Stormveil castle though.

Dark souls 1 has my favorite levels design in from's work (besides demon ruins/izalith and duke's archives), but while interconnectivity is my preferred design, there is gold in the other games as well. As much as i dislike ds3's almost too oppressive linearity that removes the feeling of finding the catacombs early that ds1 had for example or having a super op build early by going to places sooner thanks to the master key, it does have some amazing singular levels like cathedral of the Deep, irithyll, undead settlement, ringed city. Cathedral especially is designed like a mini Lordran with the main bonfire being a mini firelink. Elden ring took a lesser but more open interconnected approach to its open world and added the core design ds3 levels had in its Legacy dungeons. In general its a great first try in the open world genre, if they manage to get the difficulty right this could be their strongest template yet. I do have to admit that the teleport to farum azula from mountaintops isnt elegant. Touching cutscene, black screen and boom youre there. Couldve made a cutscene like anor londo with dragons taking you there or melina casting a teleport incantation and s***

yo how tf do i beat this boss at storm hill bridge bro
Just gotta get used to his janky-ass timing, and remember that you're fully invincible for a few frames while dodging, so you can roll into his throwing knives etc and be unharmed
