technically if you use an arpeggiator in a DAW on a hat sample you get a hi hat roll, so he's not wrong in using that word esp not as a producer himself

You are 100% correct. This argument has been going in circles for like 6 years now.
Earls “side” of the argument is technically correct but at this point it’s just pedantic and they are ignoring how constructs like genre labels are fluid. If enough people are wrong about a definition then they become right. In ten years it will be even more agreed-upon that “trap” was a sound/production style.
I don’t begrudge them trying to educate people about history tho. It seems like that’s usually the real motivation behind this argument.
