Have you played persona? If you did then its a edgier (not in a bad way), more serious version of it. If not, the best way i can describe it is pokemon if it was hard and had a good story. And instead of catching and using monsters you catch religious and mythological creatures

U right. Older games were more challenging, newer games focus more on being an overall immersive experience. Not all of them, but that's the feeling I get
