Just comes with the territory IMO
Which legend didn’t rise above cult status in their field?
well i think don't think someone not "transcending their field" is the same thing as being relegated to cult status
but very random example is legendary country or blues artists like Buck Owens or John Lee Hooker. sorry for the dust. genres where they have their own wholly contained world where the legend can exist. if a legend has to transcend their field, then there are tons of entire fields (maybe more esoteric) that can't have any legends at all.
side note im not really a big fan of trying to assign some specific universal criteria to someone being a "legend". to me a legend is what it says in the dictionary, not some specific criteria with a set amount of classics or notoriety on a specific level. kinda same with the word classic

i'm here for it
Like his rise to fame/super stardom
While it's true to a lot of rappers like Saint Aquinas mentioned, I feel like with Eminem it was more forced and manipulative
Btw it feels like he had the machine of a manufactured pop star behind him rather than a hip hop artist
he relied on controversy for a significant portion of his come up so i guess it was forced but i feel like the label pushed the controversial stuff more but the serious songs did well too. in terms of the manufactured pop star idea, i think that the label wanted him to be more like marilyn manson or other controversial artists at the time instead of a pop/rap artist. this all speculation though
he aint drop a dud yet so whats shaking your faith in him?
It’s been so long I would assume he’d have a few scrapped concepts by now. Of course I hope I’m wrong
i still haven't listened to that fiona apple album lol
great album! overrated though ngl

Weren't the serious songs largely controversial as well?
if fetty wap had blown 2016-17 rather than 2014-15 he’d still be a huge figure in the game

Yes I agree overall
What I’m trying to say is: “legend” undefined (without qualifier) in this context to me means “musical legend”. If the “field” (per dictionary example) is music, then no E-40 is not a legend (but Jay Z is); I’d the field is “Rap legend” or “Bay Area legend”, then yes E-40 is a legend
Because the thread is music hot takes and not Rap hot takes, I just don’t see how E-40 can be considered a legend in the field of music
That Lana album was so grossly overrated lmao
her debut is still her peak
