On May 25, 1991, Billboard made a change to the Billboard 200 Top Albums, when the magazine began using SoundScan data to tabulate the positions on the top albums chart. After decades of gathering numbers via a flawed honor system, the industry leader in deciding what was “popular” in popular music started employing accurate sales reports

Semi unrelated but album sales until the early 1990s were reported over the phone by store owners

And the conspiracy theories are about faking streams. The old numbers need to be audited lets be fr

exactly. this is why scorpion era was insane because between that and astroworld them niggas was able to actually play the game on a even playing field

The one thing I wish Drake did was pull the bullshit these other people are doing too boost sales. Aside from the Scorpion takeover Drakes done almost no bundling and physicals and have had minimal marketing and radio. Taylor Swift sold 500k if you don’t count physicals but because she had all the physicals the rules would allow she sold millions, Drake could sell a crazy amount if he wanted to

Yes it does . If you place some of these same modern artist in a non streaming era it’s entirely different

It doesn't make sense at all if you think about it for literally two seconds

I prefaced by saying Semi unrelated

Just saying them old numbers need to be reviewed (not MJ specficially)

And if Drake had Michaels radio play hed lap him in #1 weeks even further

If spotify existed Mike would have less pure sales btw

I mean less pure sales but in that era, MJ was the hottest thing smoking
I feel like his streams would’ve been astronomical even compared to a Drake because his fanbase was literally driven to worship/ obsession, and even beyond that his music is infectious, literally you just let it run.
I know in my personal life, my mom had a Thriller CD, and when we got the XBOX 360, we burned it onto the hard drive and would play songs from that album as we played GTA, madden, 2k, etc for years on end. There’s no equivalent compensation or centralized tracking for the value or consumption we got from that singular purchase. So I can’t really say it would make much difference

Pre streaming he had a lot of top 5s which was before his true mainstream dominance he would have an album worth of number 1s regardless of the era

If one artist sold this much then it's definitely MJ. When I was a young kid everyone had Thriller at home

The Beatles and Elvis both needs to be reviewed imo

Drake has a crazy/obsessed fan base too

Fans outside his hotel in Berlin
    instagram.com/reel/DNdZuJUOnRl

Fans have a dress up as drake contest in Toronto
    tiktok.com/@hotfreestyletv/video/7448402853456055558

And this is in the internet era. Seeing Drake isnt special because we can see him online whenever we want. And they still line up and cosplay as him

And my MOM asked me about iceman this week and even looked up the songs herself on YouTube

Shes a 60 year old immigrant who needs my help to order anything online to give you an idea of her internet literacy

Oh well everyone telling you this isn’t a great comparison . Think about it for 2 seconds we not all bugging . You need to think of why you comparing a 40 year old man who started rapping and branched out to a dead man who would be near 70 from a time without internet being as common , streaming and entirely different view of black people .

Asking a forum of many people who were barely born when he died

Man f***ing stop comparing Drake with MJ

  • Elric

    Do they adjust for streamflation?

Like it's gotta count for way more for the hits from back when people actually had to drag their ass to the store and spend actual money on a physical compared to just hitting play on Spotify

    radio back then determined #1s
