He could drop it under OVO, like he's dropped everything post-Scorpion. All UMG has had in terms of rights to those releases are licensing rights (which expire after a time). If he's indeed recouped the $400M he got from them, I could see a way where he's able to legally sidestep having to give them that last album and he gets to drop it independently. UMG, in turn, might ask to be paid for him not dropping that album but it all depends on the magic his lawyers are able to cook up.

Either way, it works well in his favor that his current deal with UMG is strictly a licensing deal and that he's fully recouped the $400M they gave him.

All of these projects were licensed under Republic which is under UMG. They have their hands in almost every pot.

    That legal situation:

    1. Has not officially started yet

    2. Will not be resolved anytime soon if it does actually go to trial, so they wouldn’t be continuously teasing this album if the release date wasn’t relatively soon

Plus there’s been rumors they’re trying to create a workaround to avoid any potential issues with UMG

The first hearing is January 16th.
And we don't know that it wouldn't be resolved any time soon. If they settle it could be. We don't know exactly what led Drake to do this in the first place or what he's seeking from it as endgame. If those asks are met behind the scenes, this is over quick.

Universal is not allowing an official Drake release during this situation. It's not happening. Akademiks just said this on his last stream even though his voice means nothing regarding this. There is no "workaround" either. We just saw Universal strike down every 100 gigs audio and the Conductor freestyle.

He can still release if it’s the joint album. If it’s credited as Partys album with Drake as feature guest and not joint artist UMG wouldn’t really have much to do with it. Party is under a different entity and just because of the lawsuit UMG can’t stop Drake from releasing. They can step on his solo releases and not promo at all but nothing contractually would stop him from being able to drop.

That isn't true for a variety of reasons, with the main one being that they literally have to sign off on anything that is released by an artist signed to them. That's how major labels work. They may not have control over "when" something is released by a major act like Drake, but they surely do have control over "if" something is. There's a huge difference. We literally just saw Drake try to free drop the 100 gigs tracks to avoid the chart flops that were to follow because he doesn't have Universal's support anymore. They flagged the tracks everywhere then they proceeded to force him to put the tracks on streaming anyway. He had no control over that.

Plus, even if he could, Drake isn't releasing a random "collab" project he can't have count towards his current Universal deal. It makes zero business sense. Drake is a Universal artist and his solo work has nothing to do with his separate OVO/Sony deal.

Apparently just one. That's more reason why the guy's theory about Drake trying to skirt around his deal like Universal is stupid makes no sense.

Lmao what’s it gotta do with Universal being stupid? When it comes to contracts some things you gotta trust me on. Drake is not putting anything out solely via Universal because of that relationship. Universal is also not blocking him dropping something. They get their split. Drake dropping as featured guest on PNDs album separate entity. Universal still gets paid their split but has no hand in the marketing aspect of it. Drake will not release a single thing via universal. He’s at a crossroads where if he drops with them and flops (bc they have the upper hand) he will look crazy post beef. If universal was blocking s*** they woulda striked 100gigs and not made him upload to streaming. They want their cut regardless how they get it. This joint album will be under OVO drake as a featured guest each record
