I’m glad you asked friend
So me explaining how Weeknd fans mass consuming his physicals don't get played = artists shouldn't drop physicals?
Lol no
Good try babe!
No it’s fine, but let’s not act like there isn’t a difference between 100k units being physicals and 100k units being streams, they mean vastly different things and people like to conflate them to make themselves feel better about things not getting streams
The difference is one is active support and the other is passive support

That’s literally what you’re implying

Lol no, it’s the constant degradation of physical units yall have been doing for years to try and minimize the fanbases that actually buy their favorite artists music, and make it seem like an illegitimate form of music consumption when it’s the opposite

After they see that something that did high physicals get no play irl it creates a disconnect in them they can’t handle. They want it to be it the same achievement as 100k streams when it’s not

How is it any different than someone streaming the album once and never coming back to it?
it still counts towards the sale

Nobody degrades it but you could buy a cd or vinyl and literally never listen to it, in order to earn even a decent amount of streams people need to actively consuming your music
No it’s fine, but let’s not act like there isn’t a difference between 100k units being physicals and 100k units being streams, they mean vastly different things and people like to conflate them to make themselves feel better about things not getting streams
But 100k units in streams means ZERO people cared enough to purchase the product
So people like to make themselves feel better about things not getting pure sales by thinking streaming is the end-all-be-all of consumption
After they see that something that did high physicals get no play irl it creates a disconnect in them they can’t handle. They want it to be it the same achievement as 100k streams when it’s not
You’re right, it’s a more impressive achievement
Streams are passive support and can be easily fabricated and manipulated.
If you were an artist you would much rather sell 100K physical copies rather than get 100K streams
How is it any different than someone streaming the album once and never coming back to it?
it still counts towards the sale
If you stream to the album front to back that is not a sale
But 100k units in streams means ZERO people cared enough to purchase the product

Streaming has completely brainwashed people man, it’s literally had direct negative effects on both the music AND the film industry
But 100k units in streams means ZERO people cared enough to purchase the product
So people like to make themselves feel better about things not getting pure sales by thinking streaming is the end-all-be-all of consumption
When its primary way most people engage with music yes it is
If you stream to the album front to back that is not a sale
It’s amazing that you don’t see anything wrong with that lol

Don’t care for the convo but isn’t it like 1500 streams = 1 physical sale so your logic wouldn’t make sense in this case

If 500 fans play ONE song on the album three times each that counts as an album sale as well. How does that make sense?

You’re right, just goes to show how silly streaming is when it comes to album sales. How the hell does 1500 streams of something equate to one album sale? Lol
It’s amazing that you don’t see anything wrong with that lol
I never said what my opinion on it was, just simply that it’s not the case nobody is taking about your hypothetical fairy land where the music industry is some perfectly fair and balanced business , we’re taking about reality and that’s what it is
You’re right, just goes to show how silly streaming is when it comes to album sales. How the hell does 1500 streams of something equate to one album sale? Lol
I mean sure but there’s probably people much smarter than you and I that have done some sort of math to equate it to that number

Because streaming is very accessible and generates basically no revenue, companies like Spotify have small margins and limited room for growth and monetization, everyone likes it because you can decades worth of music at your fingertips for $10 a month, but when you split that 10 dollars among all the songs you listened to it’s basically nothing
I mean sure but there’s probably people much smarter than you and I that have done some sort of math to equate it to that number
That’s literally what it is guy just has no clue
That’s literally what it is guy just has no clue
My point being is that we shouldn’t see physical album sales as something less than streaming. 100K units is still 100K units
The real truth is people need to be willing to pay significantly more for streaming services (like $50 a month) or be prepared to accept that fact that the market has changed and streaming at least as we know it is not going anywhere soon
My point being is that we shouldn’t see physical album sales as something less than streaming. 100K units is still 100K units
It’s not less than but it’s also not equal, it’s just different, idk why that seems hard to accept

“They want it to be the same achievement as streaming 100K units and it’s not”
This is literally implying that selling physicals is less than streaming.
When in reality in 2025, it is 100% harder to sell 100K physical copies than it is to get 100K streaming units
