Marvins Room was not a smash hit. It had a decent peak (21) but it fell the week after and kept falling till it left the Hot 100. Didn't do any damage on radio either, but that's all understandable because of the kind of song it is.

My point is that most Drake's hits are either rap, songs with a fusion of rap and R&B (but with a hip-hop driven production) or pop songs. The most-loved Drake R&B songs are a lot slower, a lot less urgent (similar to the snippets that were leaked) and typically don't become chart hits, so an album full of songs like that might end up being loved by fans and heralded as future classics but they won't do any sort of long-standing damage on the charts the way Drake's rap hits typically do.

Bashing the quality of Drake's music is something that has always happened. Bashing the success of said music isn't and even though Drake isn't chart-obsessed, he cares about being perceived as having music that's generally successful. He rushed the release of his last two albums to varying degrees of success and I think it makes little sense to rush out the release of this as well.

It's good that people know an album is done and is ready, better that than dropping with a few hours notice or with a week's notice.

I still think he does some sort of rollout for this particular album before he drops it.

I may have to agree with the great divine here. All of his smashes aren’t R&B. But I wouldn’t mind AT ALL to have Drake drop a full R&B album

I believe fans would love a full/mostly R&B Drake project but that doesn't mean it'll do damage numbers-wise. R&B generally isn't a genre that's seen much chart success in recent years anyway.

SZA had to build hype for 5 years, drop 23 tracks, make an album that while mostly R&B, also has songs with her rapping and exploring other genres like rock and indie music and even then, her R&B songs are diverse enough production-wise and in the way she sings them that they're not typical or traditional R&B songs. She has also pushed 6 singles off the album (3 before the album dropped and 3 after it dropped). All of that has helped with the album's success. Drake is gonna drop and never acknowledge the album ever again lol.

I could see an album with legit pop bangers, mixed with R&B songs and melodic rap songs performing a lot better but a pure R&B album from Drake won't do the kind of damage some people think.

Neither of those songs are smash hits btw.
