To all the Drake stans in here who think Drake is winning this and need the legal process explained to them:

Truth is a defence to defamation. Not actual truth but the person accused of defamation must have subjectively believed the statement complained of is true (not sure if US uses the objective reasonable person test?). Weird that Drake chose to sue UMG and not the person who actually made the statements, but that's why they brought up the Millie Bobbie Brown and kissing minors on stage incidents. The statements didn't come out of nowhere, UMG/Kendrick could have believed they were true, therefore it's not defamation

UMG have a point by saying it's a rap battle filled with hyperbole and accusations that aren't necessarily true. If Drake did the same things he's complaining of against Kendrick Lamar, how can he claim that he was harmed and suffered loss including insomnia, stress etc? Makes him looks like a hypocrite, weakens his position and opens the possibility for reduction of damages if some ed Judge does somehow end up awarding Drake damages. Also a basic legal principle that both sides need to come to court with clean hands

UMG are not scared of going to trial by filing papers to have the motion dismissed. Y'all misunderstanding this, just like y'all thought those companies pulling out/settling was somehow good for Drake or an admission of wrongdoing. Even lawyers don't want to go to court, it should always be the last resort. If you get the opposition's suit thrown out before it proceeds to trial, you save your client hella money, you save yourself time. This lawsuit is still at the stage where they're exchanging documents so that each side know the other side's position/arguments. Drake now has to respond to this latest filing, UMG will respond to that if necessary. It will keep going back and forth until there's nothing left to say, all issues have been ventilated and pleadings are closed. Only then can it proceed to trial if neither side is willing to settle/budge and a ruling by a presiding officer is necessary
