the few scenes i watched really disappointed me and made me appreciate donald glovers visual collaboration with hiro murai so much more

seeing his ig caption label this a surrealist exploration is funny because that’s what this immediately felt like. a meditation on surrealism. drake just saying im doing what i want, so what.

but whats really so dissapointing ab this visual release is that it feels vapid for valida sake. it feels like there’s no economic gain to the consistent commercialized musical output anymore and that show has kinda naturally run its course

the story of this hip hop outsider being treated as a serious, if not one of the great rappers isn’t really the convo

it seems like he’s completely forgoing any traditions to being a rap legend and is now completely taking the piss with the drake character

some funny moments but wow it’s a mess and it’s a shame bc there’s an opportunity to make something deeply engaging here for sure

What do you mean by no economic gain?

I generally agree with him not caring about the traditional ā€œlegendā€ imagery - but be honest, in rap, who has been truly relevant for this long and maintained this imagery to you? Eminem went sober and quite frankly is pretty cringey lmao, Ye everyone knows how that went, Wayne is basically fried, then there’s Hov who takes himself a little too serious.

Part of Drake’s charm, to me (and many others), is he doesn’t take himself overly serious. It’s relatable.

FOMO is like a fun summer we’ve all had, except with 5000x more money lol

It almost seems as if Drake is just having fun not caring about opinions like MOST RAPPERS trying too hard to look cool or tough

Creatively this s*** fire, some high art type visuals from Theo

Also some of the vibes on here are better than what we got on Habibti and MOH, Drake sounds hella inspired melodically

I guess if there is one thing that has me disappointed is that it really doesn’t say much about anything of substance. The while video it seems like he’s playing a caricature of himself.

I think part of it is wanting to maintain mystery and intrigue and I get that. There’s sort of a Micheal Jackson, Prince like mystique when it comes to Drake at this point in his career. A weird pop star that every day people can’t understand or relate to and don’t want to be like/dress like etc.

But still though that caption made it seem like the more grounded part is himself that I know is still in there had something to say. That part of himself he taps into when he gets in his bag with the raps. When he rapping I hear the maturity and self reflection, self awareness, self respect, etc. But visually he never shows it, only caricatures and memes
